BPS Related Service Department Overview- Rationale of Need: The SLP Clinical Fellowship is a mentored professional experience that begins after the completion of academic course work and clinical practicum. The goal of the clinical fellowship is to allow the Clinical Fellow (CF) to transition between being a student enrolled in a communication sciences and disorders (CSD) program and being an independent provider of speech-language pathology clinical services. The purpose of the CF is to integrate and apply the knowledge from academic education and clinical training, evaluate strengths and identify limitations, develop and refine clinical skills consistent with the Scope of Practice in Speech-Language Pathology (https://www.asha.org/policy/sp2016-00343/) , and advance the Clinical Fellow from needing constant supervision to being an independent practitioner.

Reports To: reports to the Senior Director of Related Services and the Supervisors of Related Services.

Responsibilities:

+ Provide Clinical Fellowship (CF) mentorship in accordance with MA 260 CMR 10.00.

+ Speech and Language Therapy Services: The CF mentor will assist the CF SLP in the coordination, scheduling and implementation of all IEP and 504 services on the CF SLPs caseload. The CF Mentor must provide at least two hours per week of mentorship to the CF SLP. Additional direct and indirect supervision, beyond the minimum 2 hours required may be necessary depending on the skills of the CF and the needs of the patient/client. The amount and type of mentorship must be documented. Documentation must include hours of employment per month, and the date, type, and duration of mentorship. The name, signature, and license number of the supervisor must appear on the form.

+ Evaluation: The CF Mentor will review the CF SLPs evaluation reports, documentation and recommendations. The CF Mentor is required to sign all evaluation reports written by the CF SLP prior to submission. The CF Mentor will ensure that reports reflect the results of all administered assessment measures and observations that contain information helpful and understandable to all involved parties and contain clear recommendations. Evaluations will be performed within timelines established in state and federal regulations.

+ Additional Paperwork: The CF Mentor must review all progress reports written by the CF SLP.

+ General Responsibilities: The CF Mentor must comply with state regulations concerning renewal of certifications and licenses. The CF Mentor must adhere to the ASHA guidelines for CF Mentorship.

Required Qualifications:

+ Must hold and maintain a Certificate of Clinical Competence in Speech and Language Pathology.

+ Must hold and maintain a Massachusetts Teachers Certification in Speech, Language and Hearing Disorders and Massachusetts License in Speech-Language Pathology

+ Education: Hold a Master’s Degree in Speech-Language Pathology

+ Meet all state and federal guidelines in order to be fully licensed.

+ Current authorization to work in the United States. Candidates must have such authorization by their first day of employment.

+ CF Mentor to have at least 2 years experience post Clinical Fellowship.

+ CF Mentor completion of a minimum of 2 hours of professional development in clinical instruction/supervision.

Preferred Qualifications:

+ At least three years of working experience in Boston Public Schools

Terms : Stipend- flat rate: $2,500/year

+ Note: CF Mentor may only mentor one CF SLP at a time.

+ Note: If CF Mentorship is conducted for less than the full school year, the stipend compensation will be prorated.
