Summary Primary duty includes the operation of a diesel-powered semi-tractor up to and exceeding 33,000 lbs with an attached trailer used for transporting linen between the Lake City and Gainesville Medical Centers. The incumbent also is responsible for operating a box truck up to and exceeding 33,000 lbs, delivering laundry/linen to all facilities (OPCs, Vet Center, and CBOCs) affiliated/assigned to North Florida/South Georgia Veterans Health System (NF/SGVHS) as well as support to Orlando VAMC. Responsibilities Incumbent must possess a State Operator's Permit and at least a Class A Commercial Driver's License (CDL) with passenger endorsements. Operates semi-tractor with trailer, box-refer truck for food delivery, passenger buses, and ambulances/patient transport vehicles for unscheduled and scheduled trips. Connecting and disconnecting the tractor to the trailer using the turntable (5th wheel); checking and servicing truck/trailer before operation including all lights any trip, ensure the 5th wheel is properly connected by conducting a tug test while trailer brakes are engaged. Transport passengers via shuttle bus and patient transport vehicles when assigned. This position is an integral member of the Emergency Response Team. Critical involvement in Hurricane Response Plan for patient transport out of vulnerable areas during emergency operations. Perform daily routine maintenance checks of vehicle assigned to the Motor Vehicle Operator on that day. Prepares and processes all necessary paperwork. Ensures all cargo tie down/securing equipment is in proper working condition. Ensures all cargo is properly secured, so it doesn't move/shift during transport which could cause damage. Accommodate various changes to the transportation schedule as daily needs of the facility arise. All laundry schedule changes will be directed to the supervisor for approval, and the decision will be coordinated with laundry supervision prior to approval. Reports directly to the MVO Supervisor or Fleet Management of any mechanical issues found with motor vehicle assigned that day. Will also maintain satisfactory mechanical condition and cleanliness of vehicle assigned. Transportation of food via box reefer truck from Lake City VA to the Gainesville VA when assigned. Will submit all leave requests through the MVO supervisor. Physical Requirements/ Working Conditions: Administrative functions are generally performed within an office. A substantial portion of daily activity involves the transporting of linen, food, passengers, and patients. Incumbent operates vehicles in all types of traffic and weather on public roads and are exposed to the danger of serious accidents. They drive in heavy traffic and at highway speeds over complicated road and interchange systems. Incumbent is exposed to weather conditions and the possibility of cuts, bruises, strains, sprains etc. Work areas may be dusty and dirty. Incumbent must adjust hours of work to meet the needs of the unit and to complete the mission and goals of the VHS. This position may require working overtime, in uncontrolled environments, in vehicles and on the highways. Additional Information This occupation is being considered for a Veterans Health Administration enterprise-wide Critical Skills Incentive (CSI). Candidates may be eligible for a lump sum CSI. The amount of lump sum CSI is determined based on appointment date and may be pro-rated as determined by the end date of the CSI. Eligible candidates will be required to sign a service agreement agreeing to an obligated service period and failure to complete the obligated service period may result in a debt for the unearned portion of the CSI.
