Salary Grade: NC18 Salary Range: $61,545.00-107,703.00
Positions 60025912 and 60025878 will be filled from this posting. You only have to apply once to be considered for both positions.
Performs the more complex duties in the engineering squad involved in utilization of private engineering firms for bridge design/plan preparation. Investigates resolution of plan/construction conflicts. Evaluates nonstandard structure designs/details proposed by private engineering firms. Develops man hours/cost estimates for work prepared by private engineering firms. Performs engineering computations on special projects as requested by other units. Works with lower level staff members giving technical advice, helping to complete special assignments, and reviewing work for completeness, accuracy and compliance with DOT policies and practices. Attends meetings representing the Structure Management Unit on design and construction concerns.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities / Competencies
Management prefers applicants that demonstrate the following:
+ Experience in reviewing highway structure plans to ensure conformance with NCDOT standards, policies and federal standards.
+ Experience in reviewing plans prepared by private engineering firms for design-bid-build and design-build projects.
+ Working knowledge of preparing man-day and construction cost estimates for structure plans prepared by in-house or private engineering firms.
+ Experience in resolving plan errors and responding to request for information from other NCDOT units, private engineering firms and contractors.
+ Working knowledge of engineering software including Microstation, Geopak, and MS Office software.
Additional Expectations:
A thorough knowledge of policies, procedures and current NCDOT structure standards in relation to various highway related structure types. Ability to apply technical engineering skill and knowledge to different design and analysis tasks. Ability to use various engineering software including Microstation, Geopak, and MS Office software. Effective and timely communication with private engineering firms, other NCDOT departments and other team members. Ability to make decisions and take action consistent with available facts, constraints, and with anticipation of consequences
Minimum Education and Experience Requirements

Bachelor’s degree in an applicable field of engineering from an appropriately accredited institution and three (3) years of progressively responsible experience; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
Necessary Special Qualification May require registration as a professional engineer by the North Carolina Board of Examiners for Engineers and Surveyors.
