    Description

    ODA Assistant

     

    The Office of Disability Affairs is a division of the Civil Rights, Inclusion and Opportunity Department at the City of Detroit. The mission of the Office of Disability Affairs (ODA) is to increase independence, opportunities, community participation, safety, and wellness for persons with disabilities in the City of Detroit, and to ensure inclusion, representation, and equity for persons with disabilities as it relates to City employment, programs, and services.

     

    The ODA Assistant is a full-time position that reports to the ODA Director and assists in carrying out administrative activities in the office. This position requires someone that is highly organized, takes initiative and has administrative experience. The ODA Assistant will also have the opportunity to work on special assignments and with a range of disability policy issues, as needed.

     

    Examples of Duties

     

    Administrative (60%)

     

    Screens callers and visitors; assisting with answering questions and referrals

     

    Schedules and manages calendar for Director’s meetings and ODA events

     

    Reviews correspondence and determines the appropriate method for routing. If necessary, responds to correspondence in timely fashion

     

    Attends community meetings and assists with community outreach, as needed

     

    Prepares and/or makes presentations, reports, and memos, as needed

     

    Assists with document conversion/scanning, visual formatting, editing, and with accessible software, as needed

     

    Develops and revises processes and forms to improve workflow and office management

     

    Data entry of program and administrative information

     

    Research (40%)

     

    Conducts research and track disability rights laws at federal, state, and local levels

     

    Develops materials and methods for data collection and analysis, including surveying Detroit residents with disabilities

     

    Supports the drafting of memoranda, policy briefs, facts sheets, blog articles, and background papers on disability affairs issues

     

    Assists with identifying funding opportunities for general operations and programs

    Minimum Qualifications

    Bachelor’s Degree, preferably in human resources, employee relations, public administration, business management, business administration or a related field. Advanced training or continuing education in human resources management or labor laws and practices preferred.

     

    Three (3) years of experience facilitating and/or providing technical support in the management of human resources and/or labor relations services in multiple functional areas including, but not limited to, work place violence and discrimination and harassment or in the adjudication of legal matters related to the provision of those services.

     

    Equivalent combinations of education and experience may be substituted to meet the education and experience requirement of this position.

    RETIREMENT BENEFITS

    City Employees Retirement System

    As a regular City employee you automatically become a member of the General Retirement System. This entitles you to a retirement allowance after:

     

    • Completion of thirty (30) years of service;

     

    - At age sixty (60) if you have at least ten (10) years of service, or

     

    - At age sixty-five (65) with eight (8) years of service.

     

    • In the event of disability, other eligibility rules apply);

     

    - An early, actuarially reduced, retirement is offered after you have attained at least twenty-five (25) years of service;

     

    • Employees are vested after ten (10) years of service, regardless of age.
