    Department Summary

    The Division of Student Life supports the university’s academic and strategic plan through comprehensive programs and services that promote and advance student learning and success while fostering an inclusive and vibrant campus community. Student Life includes four major portfolios, the Office of the Dean of Students, Experiential Learning & Engagement, Health & Wellbeing, and Division Administration. Key programs and departments within the division include but are not limited to University Health Services, Erb Memorial Union, Physical Education & Recreation, Parent and Family Programs, Major Student Events (Commencement, Homecoming, University Day), Fraternity and Sorority Life, Counseling, Health Promotion, Multicultural and Identity Based Support Services, Student Government Engagement & Success, Student Conduct and Community Standards, and Support for Students in Crisis and students of Concern.

     

    The Erb Memorial Union (EMU) is a department of the Division of Student Life. The EMU is a multifaceted auxiliary service that employs over 90 professional staff and 400 student staff, and serves over 15 thousand daily users during the academic year. The EMU welcomes students, faculty, staff, the community and visitors to campus, and its mission is to provide learning experiences and opportunities for personal growth in an open, inclusive, and resource-rich community where students and staff collaborate to inspire and sustain extraordinary programs and services that promote diversity and social interaction. The EMU is student centered and is operated in collaboration with a student Board, who are actively involved in determining the character and scope of the department and approve the budget recommendations of all EMU services and programs.

     

    The Moss Street Children’s Center (MSCC) is an early childhood development program that serves student and faculty staff families, with children ages 3 months – 5 years. Our large, on-campus center is open from 8:15-4:30 four days per week, and 8:15-3:15 early release one day per week.

    Position Summary

    The purpose of this position is to provide for a lead teaching position for infants through preschool age in the Moss St. Children’s Center. Because each classroom is self-contained, the teacher has responsibility for classroom operations including the coordination of staff, center procedures, curriculum planning and implementation, and record keeping. Guidelines used for operation will follow Childcare Division Regulations, state health regulations, and program rules and philosophy. This position supervises students and reports to a mentor teacher.

     

    The work schedule for this position will be between 8:00AM –4:45PM, Monday through Friday, with occasional evening and weekend commitments.

    Duties will include:

    • Planning, preparing, and implementing developmentally-appropriate curriculum including motor, language, social-emotional, cognitive, self-help/living, creative arts, and leisure skills; working with staff to provide consistent and stimulating educational program

    • Interacting with children individually, in small groups, and in the large group; leading group activities; guiding free play; providing one on one nurturing; using positive behavior guidance techniques

    • Guiding, directing, and educating teaching assistants, practicum students, work-study students, and aides

    • Providing consistent and clear communication with parents; initiating and conducting parent conferences; cooperating with Parent council in coordinating program and parent Council interests and events; participating in fundraisers

    • Supervising the preparation, serving, and clean-up of meals and snacks; conducting "point of service" meal counts and completing USDA documents; participating in the maintenance of supplies and equipment.

    Minimum Requirements

    • An Associate's degree in Early Childhood Education or Child Development from a recognized program; OR

    • A Child Development Associate (CDA) credential; OR

    • A minimum of twenty semester hours (thirty quarter hours) of college courses in Early Childhood Education or Child Development; AND one year of experience in a certified day care center or comparable group care program; OR

    • Two years of experience, including at least one year as a teacher, in a certified day care center or comparable group child care program

    Professional Competencies

    • Ability to communicate effectively with children, parents, and staff from diverse backgrounds and cultures

    Preferred Qualifications

    • Three or more years of experience supervising or leading the work of other staff members

    • Experience using child development assessment tools and reporting results

    • Experience with infant and preschool teaching
