    Adaptive Optics Associates – Xinetics (AOA Xinetics), a wholly-owned Northrop Grumman Space Systems, Mission Enabling Products operating unit, has an exciting opportunity for a Staff Optical Engineer to support Special Programs business activities in East Hartford, CT.

    Overview

     

    Reporting directly to the Special Programs Optical and R&D Group Manager, the Staff Optical Engineer will work with program managers and engineers to develop system architectures that meet specific program requirements and fulfill the key system functions. Systems may include optical, mechanical, electrical, and software components. Ability to work in a multi-disciplinary environment is essential.

    Responsibilities:

    The successful candidate will be an individual contributor as an Optical Engineer on programs that have significant optical and photonics aspects. You will be responsible for the overall development of optical systems and work within interdisciplinary teams to develop novel and innovative solutions to advanced technical problems

     

    + Develop mathematical models for simulation and analysis of optical and electro-optical systems

    + Specify, select and qualify active and passive optical components

    + Develop and benchmark system performance models, and implement test procedures

    + Engage with customers, address complex and difficult technical issues and develop practical product solutions

    + Work closely with and collaborate with the Special Programs Director, Program Managers and other technical personnel on quotes, proposals and responses to customer technical inquiries

    + Travel regularly to customer locations to support design and program reviews

    Basic Qualifications:

    + Bachelor of Science degree in Engineering or Physics with 14+ years’ experience in optics and/or photonics; OR 12+ years’ experience with a Master’s degree; OR 9+ years’ experience with a PhD

    + Strong familiarity with systems containing optical, mechanical, electrical, and software components

    + Possesses thorough knowledge of optical and photonics principles and applications

    + Familiarity with system requirements, documents, and how system requirements flow to lower-level subcomponents

    + Experience preparing and executing detailed program reviews

    + Strong critical thinking and logical reasoning skills and the ability to apply them to solve issues and predict potential technical risks

    + Possess superior analytical and problem-solving skills, the ability to gain internal support, operate independently with limited supervision and feedback, and the ability to establish a solid working relationship with technical staff, division managers, and peers in the business areas

    + Ability to travel up to 10 – 20% of the time

    + Active TS/SCI clearance

    + US Citizenship is a requirement

    Preferred Qualifications:

    + Master of Science degree in Engineering or Physics

    + Strong understanding of fiber optic transmission, communication theory, advanced optical signal coding and modulation formats, and network architecture

    + Advanced knowledge and experience with fiber optic systems and components, such as lasers, modulators, EDFAs, dispersion compensators, fibers, passive components, receivers, and high-speed optical modules and sub-systems

    + Experience with commercial optical transport products, including 40G/100G coherent systems

    + Experience with transmission modeling software (such as VPI), ZEMAX optical design software, LabVIEW, and MATLAB

    + Prior experience with our products

     

    Primary Level Salary Range: $188,200.00 - $282,200.00

     

    The above salary range represents a general guideline; however, Northrop Grumman considers a number of factors when determining base salary offers such as the scope and responsibilities of the position and the candidate's experience, education, skills and current market conditions.

     

    Depending on the position, employees may be eligible for overtime, shift differential, and a discretionary bonus in addition to base pay. Annual bonuses are designed to reward individual contributions as well as allow employees to share in company results. Employees in Vice President or Director positions may be eligible for Long Term Incentives. In addition, Northrop Grumman provides a variety of benefits including health insurance coverage, life and disability insurance, savings plan, Company paid holidays and paid time off (PTO) for vacation and/or personal business.
