I&C Specialist/Engineer

Lindsay Hill Generating Station

This position is responsible for providing technical direction for control systems, program configuration, installation of systems, and troubleshooting system problems on distributed/process control systems. The responsible individual is expected to provide technical advice and direction during the design and implementation phases of projects. This position will also be responsible for the ongoing development and execution of the maintenance strategy including life cycle assessment, outage planning and execution, and implementation of various instrumentation upgrades.

Education Requirements (Specialist):

+ Associates degree (two-year) in instrumentation, controls, and/or electronics or relevant experience

Education Requirements (Engineer):

+ Bachelors degree (four-year) in engineering from an ABET accredited college

Experience Requirements:

+ Experience with instrument and/or controls in a plant or industrial environment.

+ Instrumentation background (calibration, & troubleshooting)

+ Experience with programmable logic controllers and/or distributed control systems is required.

+ Moderate to high level of proficiency in one of the following PLC, DCS, or TCS control system platforms (ABB, Emerson Ovation, Bailey, Allen Bradley, GE PLC/PAC, GE turbines)

+ Experience with one or more of the following HMIs: Emerson Ovation, General Electric CIMPLICITY

+ Field troubleshooting experience on control strategy, field instrumentation, and control systems equipment failures

+ Experience managing projects as an Electrical, Instrument or Control lead.

+ Power Generation, Pulp & Paper, or similar industry background

Other Requirements:

+ Must be available to work nights, weekends and/or holidays as needed

+ Must be available to work extended hours as needed

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:

+ Proven Leadership Skills

+ Good oral/written communication skills and ability to work effectively with varied individuals (craft personnel, support staff, supervisory staff, and management) is a must

+ Strong organizational, administrative, time management, project management, facilitation and analytical skills are required

+ Must have the ability to provide, understand, and follow highly detailed instructions and assume a high degree of responsibility

+ Self-motivation and demonstrated initiative is crucial for this position

+ Ability to interface with vendors and contractors while representing the best interests of Southern Company

Job Responsibilities:

+ Perform system owner responsibilities for control systems

+ Project Lead for various Capital and O&M Projects (responsibilities included such as budgeting, scope, schedule, and contractor management)

+ Assist functional system owner to replace and upgrade instrumentation based on life cycle strategy

+ Assist functional system owner and/or project engineer in identifying instrument needs for retrofits and capital projects

+ Assist Operations with alarm management effort

+ Assist Electrical & Instruments (E&I) group with critical instruments troubleshooting on as needed basis

+ Leads troubleshooting of day-to-day instrumentation and controls technical issues that cannot be resolved by operators or technicians

+ Assists in specification, configuration, field checkout, procurement, start-up and tuning of control systems

+ Participates on project teams responsible for scoping, scheduling, and budgeting of instrumentation and controls projects

+ Work closely with Southern Company Services and OEM’s on the design and purchase of new equipment and modification to existing control systems platforms

+ Develop and deliver controls related training for Operations and Maintenance personnel

+ Assist in Maintaining NERC CIP/Cyber Security compliance
