    Job Function:

    DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS: This is an important grounds maintenance position involving upkeep of lawns, turf grass, trees, shrubs, flowerbeds, sidewalks, driveways, and building exteriors. This employee may operate grounds motorized equipment or light-weight trucks in tending the lawns and in hauling materials and refuse. Work involves manual labor and is performed under various weather conditions, including extremes of heat and cold, humidity, or inclement conditions. When assigned to the County Parks Department, Grounds Equipment Operators may be subject to working evening hours relating to golf course irrigation or related functions. Effective communication with customers is paramount for both safety and courtesy when operating equipment at a busy time. The Grounds Equipment Operator works under general supervision from and reports directly to a higher-ranking employee. Direct supervision may be exercised over full-time, part-time, or seasonal laborers. Does related work as required.

     

    TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES: (All need not be performed in a given position. Other related activities may be performed, although not listed.)

     

    + Waters golf course turf playing surfaces (night shift)

    + Cleans shelters, lodges, restrooms, and related support facilities

    + Mows lawns and trims and edges around walks, flowerbeds, walls, fences, hedges, trees, and shrubs

    + Prunes trees and shrubs

    + Plants, waters, fertilizes, and weeds grass, flowers, trees, and shrubs

    + Rakes leaves, picks up brush and litter

    + Plows or shovels snow and spreads salt on walkways, steps, driveways, crossings, or rinks

    + Repairs and paints fences, gates, walks, walls, tables, benches, and guardrails

    + Installs playground and athletic equipment

    + Builds athletic fields

    + Cleans out gutters, drainage ditches, culverts, and catch basins

    + Operates manual, power tools, and equipment

    + Operates light trucks to deliver supplies and cart debris, loads and unloads trucks

    + Operates a variety of tractors and small equipment for moving and general transport

    + Performs minor preventive maintenance tasks on grounds equipment or vehicles

    + May mark, reline, or layout athletic fields.

     

    FULL PERFORMANCE KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS: Good knowledge of grounds maintenance procedures and practices; good knowledge of hand tools and power equipment; working knowledge of plant care and basic landscaping; ability to safely operate hand, power, and motorized grounds tools and equipment; ability to perform preventative maintenance and minor repair work on motorized grounds equipment; ability to care for and store tools and equipment; ability to follow and give simple oral and written instructions; ability to push, hold, and lift equipment, tools, supplies, debris; willingness to perform manual labor; willingness to work alone; mechanical aptitude; endurance; physical condition commensurate with the demands of the position.

    Required Qualifications:

    MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: There are no educational or experience qualifications for this position.

    SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:

    Possession of a valid Class *D* Operator's license issued by the New York State Department of Motor Vehicles at the time of appointment.

    Preferred Qualifications:

    + Bilingual and able to read, write, and speak Spanish, or other languages, proficiently

    Additional Information:

    Job Type: Full-time, Permanent

     

    Hours: 6:00 am to 2:00 pm Monday through Friday

     

    Salary: $38,605.08 - $49,156.18

     

    Pay Transparency Disclaimer: The posted salary range represents the full salary scale for this position, which includes all pay steps within the range. The starting salary for all new hires is typically at the entry-level figure, as determined by the step placement of the Collective Bargaining Agreement. Progression through the range occurs over time based on established criteria such as length of service and performance. This range is provided to give applicants an understanding of the potential earnings over the course of a career in this role.
