Description:
JOB SUMMARY
Provides services of both a technical and non-technical nature in the laboratory service areas. Performs Moderately complex and Waived laboratory tests in any assigned department of the clinical laboratory to provide physicians with rapid and accurate laboratory test results. The laboratory assistant aids the Medical Laboratory Technician/Medical Laboratory Scientist in their daily work with specimen processing of samples, loading the automated line, performing moderately complex or waived testing, and resulting as assigned. The laboratory assistant will need to rotate between general laboratory duties, phlebotomy, and the reference lab send out department with processing specimens. This will include making sure specimen requirements are met per reference laboratory standards and proper storage of specimens between transit are maintained, answering calls for the department, and troubleshooting any specimen or order issues that may arise.
+ Performs waived and moderately complex analytic processes without direct supervision.
+ Uses laboratory procedures and techniques for which they are qualified, trained, and demonstrates competency according to established lab standard operating procedures (SOPs).
+ Operates, calibrates, and performs minor troubleshooting on laboratory instruments and ensures proper functioning of laboratory equipment.
+ Performs quality control procedures as specified in lab section SOPs and maintains QC records and documentation necessary to meet the standards of accrediting agencies.
+ Follows appropriate specimen collection, handling, transport, and recording procedures.
+ Resolves sample handling problems or refers problems to a Certified MLT/MLS.
+ Processes data, verifies accuracy, and enters data in the laboratory computer system in a timely manner.
+ Appropriately performs internal and external proficiency testing (PT).
+ Assists with workload in any section where competency has been verified and is current.
+ Recognizes critical patient results and follows the defined process for reporting them.
+ Recognizes abnormal, unexpected, or implausible results, errors, and problems with patient tests.
+ Consults with a Certified MLT/MLS, or Manager to resolve problems.
+ Appropriately prioritizes order of testing and assists with the coordination of general workflow in assigned area.
+ Evaluates QC results to determine validity of testing using defined parameters.
+ Responds to technical questions consistent with level of training.
+ Trains new and current employees in procedures and policies. Maintains adequate inventory of reagents and supplies.
+ Reviews laboratory procedures and suggests improvements and efficiencies.
+ Performs test validation review as assigned in areas of competency.
**Schedule:** Monday-Friday Day Shift. Tentative hours are 7am-330pm
POSITION QUALIFICATIONS
+ Bachelor’s degree in Chemistry, Biochemistry, Biology or Health Related Science field required. Educational transcript required for verification.
+ Enrollment in a Medical Laboratory Science program preferred.
