The University of Virginia Medical Center, a nationally recognized Level 1 Trauma Center, is seeking an Advanced Practice Provider (APP) Manager to lead and support an expanding team of APPs in the Emergency Department. This leadership role combines clinical practice (80%) with administrative responsibilities (20%), with the expectation that administrative effort will grow as the APP team continues to expand.
The APP Manager will oversee APPs staffing a 24/7 ED observation unit as well as multiple clinical areas within the main Emergency Department. The role includes administrative management, recruiting, onboarding, performance coaching, and operational optimization to ensure the APP team delivers high-quality, patient-centered care and contributes to departmental goals.
The successful candidate will collaborate closely with the medical director, departmental administration, the department chair, nursing leadership, and other leaders across the institution. Formally, the ED APP manager will report to UVA Health’s Medical Specialties APP Director through the Center for Advanced Practice. There will also be a secondary reporting relationship with the ED Medical Director.
Key Responsibilities
Leadership & Administration (20% effort, increasing with program growth):
+ Manage and support APPs within the Emergency Department and ED Observation Unit; including serving as the first point-of-contact in the APP help chain.
+ Partner with departmental and institutional leadership to align APP services with operational, clinical, and strategic priorities.
+ Serve as the APP representative in monthly ED operations meetings (and others as needed).
+ Hold monthly APP staff meetings
+ Develop, update, and execute team-specific policies
+ Lead APP recruiting, hiring, and onboarding processes to support program growth.
+ Provide coaching, mentorship, and performance evaluations for APPs.
+ Develop scheduling strategies that ensure safe, equitable, and effective coverage across clinical areas.
+ Identify opportunities to optimize APP workflows, productivity, and contributions to departmental objectives.
+ Working with UVA’s Clinical Staff Office, coordinate APP privileging, credentialing, and compliance activities.
+ Support professional development, continuing education, and retention initiatives.
+ Collaborate on quality, safety, and performance improvement projects impacting patient care and team operations.
+ Represent the ED in system-wide APP leadership activities.
Clinical Practice (80% effort):
+ Provide direct patient care within the UVA Emergency Department.
+ Serve as a clinical role model and resource for APP colleagues.
+ Deliver evidence-based, patient-centered care across diverse ED settings, including the observation unit.
Preferred:
+ Prior experience in APP management, leadership, or supervisory roles.
+ Experience in academic medical center or Level 1 Trauma Center environments.
+ Strong interpersonal and communication skills, with ability to partner across disciplines.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS
Education: Master’s or Doctorate in Nursing (Nurse Practitioner, Clinical Nurse Specialist, Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetist and Certified Nurse Midwife); Master’s or Doctorate in Science (Physician Assistant or Radiologist Assistant)
Experience: 5 years as a Nurse Practitioner, Clinical Nurse Specialist, Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetist, Certified Nurse Midwife, Radiologist Assistant or Physician Assistant
Licensure: Licensed to practice as a Registered Nurse in the Commonwealth of Virginia and licensed to practice as a Nurse Practitioner, Clinical Nurse Specialist, Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetist or Certified Nurse Midwife in the Commonwealth of Virginia, or licensed to practice as a Physician Assistant in the Commonwealth of Virginia or licensed to practice as a Radiologist Assistant in the Commonwealth of Virginia. American Heart Association (AHA) Health Care Provider BLS certification. American Heart Association (AHA) Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS), Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS), or Neonatal Advanced Life Support (NALS) required for selected clinical practice settings. Other certifications may be required to be obtained after hire depending on the clinical setting
PHYSICAL DEMANDS
Job requires standing for prolonged periods, frequently walking/bending/stooping. Proficient communicative, auditory and visual skills; Attention to detail and ability to write legibly; Ability to lift/push/pull 20 - 50lbs. May be exposed to chemicals, blood/body fluids and infectious disease.
Position Compensation Range: $115,793.60 - $185,265.60 Annual
