    The Director, Health Equity is a key leadership role within Beth Israel Lahey Health (BILH), responsible for developing, operationalizing, and sustaining equity-driven quality improvement strategies across the health system. Reporting to the Vice President of Health Equity, the Director will lead a team of professionals focused on identifying and addressing disparities in clinical outcomes, patient experience, access, and safety.

     

    This role is highly collaborative and requires a strategic thinker with strong operational and project management capabilities, as well as a deep understanding of healthcare quality and health equity. The Director will work across a highly matrixed organization to align initiatives with system-wide goals, build consensus among stakeholders, and ensure consistent application of best practices in equity-centered care.

     

    The Director will use data to inform strategy, evaluate performance, and engage clinical and operational leaders in targeted performance improvement efforts. This includes leveraging equity analytics to uncover disparities, co-designing interventions with clinical teams and community partners, and measuring the impact of interventions on outcomes and experience.

     

    As a leader and people manager, the Director will oversee a team responsible for delivering on enterprise-wide initiatives, mentoring staff, and cultivating a culture of inclusion, accountability, and continuous improvement. The Director will also serve as a key resource and advisor to executives, clinicians, and system leaders on how to embed health equity principles into care delivery, quality reporting, and operational decision-making.

     

    This position plays a central role in fostering BILH’s strategic commitment to transform care delivery by advancing health equity and improving outcomes for all patients and communities we serve, while engaging our workforce to drive meaningful community impact.

    Job Description:

    **Essential Duties & Responsibilities** including but not limited to:

    + Partner with senior leaders to develop and execute system-wide strategies that integrate health equity and clinical quality.

    + Lead, mentor, and manage a team of professionals responsible for advancing equity-centered performance improvement initiatives.

    + Identify disparities in clinical quality and outcomes through robust data analysis and develop targeted interventions.

    + Lead high-impact, system-level quality and equity improvement projects using Lean, Six Sigma, or other proven methodologies.

    + Develop and monitor key performance indicators and dashboards related to health equity and quality improvement.

    + Collaborate with quality, safety, population health, analytics, community benefits, clinical teams, and human resources to align strategies and operations.

    + Facilitate cross-functional workgroups focused on reducing health disparities and improving equitable access and outcomes.

    + Support compliance with regulatory and accreditation standards related to health equity (e.g., CMS, The Joint Commission, NCQA, MA DPH).

    + Prepare and present reports and presentations for internal and external stakeholders, highlighting disparities, improvement progress, and impact.

    + Contribute to system readiness for equity-related audits, surveys, and performance assessments.

    + Foster a culture of inclusion, continuous learning, and accountability within the team and across the organization.

    Minimum Qualifications:

    Education:

    Master’s degree required in Public Health, Healthcare Administration, Nursing, Health Policy, or a related field.

    Licensure, Certification & Registration:

    None required, but certification in quality, project management, or related fields preferred (e.g., CPHQ, Lean Six Sigma, PMP).

    Experience:

    + Minimum of 5 years of progressive experience in healthcare quality, performance improvement, health equity, or related fields.

    + Experience in a people management and/or a formal leadership role.

    + Proven success leading cross-functional projects and initiatives in a large, complex, or matrixed healthcare environment.

    Skills, Knowledge & Abilities:

    + Strong knowledge of health equity principles and the impact of social determinants of health.

    + Deep understanding of quality improvement tools and methodologies.

    + Experience managing teams and building a culture of collaboration and accountability.

    + Strong analytical, data interpretation, and project management skills.

    + Excellent written and verbal communication and facilitation skills.

    + Ability to influence, lead change, and build consensus across diverse stakeholder groups.

    Preferred Qualifications & Skills:

    Experience working in a start-up culture characterized by creative problem-solving, open communication, and agility.

     

    Experience with community-based or population health programs.

     

    Familiarity with the Massachusetts healthcare landscape and relevant regulatory bodies.

     

    Certification in healthcare quality (e.g., CPHQ), Lean Six Sigma, or project management (e.g., PMP).

     

    Clinical licensure or background (e.g., RN, MD) is a plus.

    Dept/Unit Specific Skills:

    Experience in implementing health equity initiatives at the system or enterprise level.

     

    Ability to navigate and lead within a highly matrixed organization.

     

    Commitment to advancing racial, ethnic, and social equity in healthcare.

    Ensuring adherence to accreditation and reporting standards.

     

    7.Human Resources

     

    Development or implementation of any workforce initiatives, policies, or trainings.

    Physical Requirements & Environment:

    + Hybrid work model: combination of remote and onsite presence required.

    + Travel between BILH sites as needed.

    + Standard office environment; ability to work at a computer for extended periods.

    + Occasional off-hours work to meet project deadlines or attend events.
