Job Summary
The Postdoctoral Researcher for the Gu & Ma Research Group supports the discovery of novel polymer phases through data-driven research. The successful candidate will integrate into a workflow that combines high-throughput experimentation, database development, and machine learning to investigate phase behavior in multiblock copolymers and polymer blends. In addition to conducting advanced research, the individual will oversee laboratory operations, supervise research personnel, and coordinate activities with faculty and research sponsors. Responsibilities also include analyzing and interpreting data, preparing technical reports and publications, and presenting findings to both scientific and sponsor audiences.
Primary Job Duties and Responsibilities
+ Conduct experiments and data-driven investigations, applying machine learning approaches and database tools to predict and discover novel polymer phases.
+ Analyze complex research data and prepare manuscripts, proposals, technical documents, and progress reports for both scientific and sponsor audiences.
+ Oversee high-throughput sample formulation, processing, data management, and overall laboratory operations, including workflow coordination and resource allocation.
+ Supervise and mentor graduate students by guiding research priorities, monitoring progress, and providing technical expertise and direction.
+ Facilitate communication and reporting with research sponsors, ensuring timely updates and compliance with funding requirements.
+ Participate in travel to user facilities, national laboratories, and sponsor meetings, and host visiting collaborators.
+ Support faculty in managing research projects and fulfilling institutional and sponsor reporting obligations, strengthening collaborations and advancing program goals.
+ Comply with all University and departmental policies, procedures, and regulations and perform other duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications
Ph.D. from an accredited college or university in Chemical Engineering, Materials Science, or a closely related discipline; and five (5) years of experience in materials characterization and/or machine learning. A demonstrated record of peer-reviewed publications is essential.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities (KSA)
+ Strong knowledge of polymer physics, including principles of structure, properties, and performance.
+ Proficiency in polymer morphology characterization techniques and related analytical methods.
+ Ability to independently design, analyze, and interpret complex technical data with objectivity and accuracy.
+ Demonstrated capacity for independent thinking, problem-solving, and innovation in a research or technical setting.
+ Self-motivated with the ability to manage tasks and deliver results with minimal supervision.
+ Skilled in working effectively within collaborative, multidisciplinary teams that include scientists and engineers across diverse fields.
+ Excellent communication skills, with the ability to convey complex technical concepts clearly to both scientific experts and general audiences.
Preferred Qualifications
Experience in one or more of the following experimental techniques would be strongly preferred: high throughput synthesis and characterization, machine learning, data driven materials design. The candidate will be able to travel to national laboratory.
