    We are part of Windows Servicing and Delivery (WSD) team that delivers high quality servicing releases to keep Microsoft customers protected and productive by continuously building and delivering Windows Operating System updates to consumers, enterprises and Microsoft Cloud customers. We are looking for a **Software Engineer II** to help realize this story. The ideal candidate will thrive amid ambiguity and enjoy building lasting systems in collaboration with others where success not only includes business value but having a cost-effective, reliable, state and scalable solution.

     

    Our team is trying to solve the problem of not only keeping the Windows powered enterprises, data centers, and cloud services safe and secure through software updates but also to consume these Windows updates with zero to minimal downtime such that businesses and consumers continue to remain available and productive deploying these updates. We are building a system that will help in engineering, building, delivery and deployment of software updates for a code base as big and wide as Windows in a re-bootless way. We are building a modern AI powered engineering system that is intelligent, efficient and can operate on a scale to produce re-bootless updates. We will also enhance Windows with new innovations and capabilities to deploy, monitor and manage these updates. You will work across OS components, compiler-linker-loader tool chain, installers and management to build the stack and overall solution.     Responsibilities

    + Design and develop software and services at scale, innovating on the latest technologies and following modern engineering practices.

    + Contribute to the identification of dependencies, and the development of design documents for a product area with little oversight. Help identify other teams and technologies that will be leveraged, how they will interact, and when one's system may provide support to others. Contribute to determining back-end dependencies associated with product, application, service, or platform functionality for product features.

    + Identify areas to efforts to integrate instrumentation for gathering telemetry data on system behavior such as performance, reliability, availability, usage, and safety mechanisms. Contribute to sustaining feedback loops from telemetry resulting in subsequent designs. Help create outputs of telemetry such as notifications or dashboards.

    + Create a clear and articulated plan for testing and assuring quality of solutions, and define success for outcomes of tests (e.g., unit tests). Add new tests, remove antiquated tests, and aggregate tests to improve tests in the feature area. Help drive efforts for augmenting test cases and ensures that the solution area has good test coverage. Help integrate automation features when planning for testing.

    + Maintain close technical relationship with partner teams, provide technical leadership and drive for engineering excellence and results.

    Qualifications

    Required Qualifications:

    + Bachelor's Degree in Computer Science or related technical field AND 2+ years technical engineering experience with coding in languages including, but not limited to, C, C++, C#, Java or Python

    + OR equivalent experience.

    + Solid understanding of Windows operating system internals.

    + Proficiency in building cloud-native applications on Azure.

    + Hands-on experience with OpenAI APIs or similar LLM-based platforms.

    + Solid experience with SQL and NoSQL databases (e.g., Cosmos DB, PostgreSQL, MongoDB).

    Other Requirements** **:

    Ability to meet Microsoft, customer and/or government security screening requirements are required for this role. These requirements include but are not limited to the following specialized security screenings:

     

    + **Microsoft Cloud Background Check** : This position will be required to pass the Microsoft Cloud background check upon hire/transfer and every two years thereafter.

    **Preferred Qualifications** :

    + 3+ years of software development/design experience.

    + 3+ years of experience in software development with C/C++ or equivalent

    + Exposure to assembly, OS kernel, low-level trouble shooting and debugging.

    + Experience with cloud platforms, Azure, Kusto, Python, AI tools is added advantage.

    + Proven expertise in developing frameworks and solutions that scale across multiple teams and products.

    + Excellent problem-solving skills and the ability to design and implement scalable, high-performance solutions.

    + Demonstrated ability to collaborate across multiple teams and align technical efforts with organizational goals.

    + Experience with AI agent frameworks (e.g., Semantic Kernel, LangChain).

    + Functional knowledge of test-driven development and CI/CD pipelines.

    + Excellent communication and cross-team collaboration skills.

     

    Software Engineering IC3 - The typical base pay range for this role across the U.S. is USD $100,600 - $199,000 per year. There is a different range applicable to specific work locations, within the San Francisco Bay area and New York City metropolitan area, and the base pay range for this role in those locations is USD $131,400 - $215,400 per year.
