Position Summary
The Director, Data Governance, Metadata & Cataloging is responsible for defining and operationalizing the frameworks, standards, and practices that ensure R&D data is trusted, well-documented, and easily discoverable. This role integrates data governance, metadata management, and data cataloging into a unified capability that drives data quality, compliance, and interoperability across the R&D data ecosystem.
As part of the Data Strategy & Products team, the Director will partner with Master Data Management, Knowledge Management, Data Products, and Data Science teams to ensure governance, metadata, and cataloging enable the FAIR principles (Findable, Accessible, Interoperable, Reusable) and make R&D data “AI-ready.”
Key Responsibilities** **:
Data Governance Strategy & Execution
+ Define and execute the R&D data governance strategy, ensuring alignment with enterprise standards and regulatory requirements.
+ Establish clear ownership, stewardship, and accountability models across scientific and operational domains.
+ Drive adoption of controlled vocabularies, taxonomies, and standards across R&D.
Metadata Management
+ Develop and manage metadata standards to describe, contextualize, and trace R&D data assets across their lifecycle.
+ Partner with ontologies and knowledge graph initiatives to ensure metadata is harmonized with enterprise semantic frameworks.
+ Ensure metadata captures data lineage, provenance, and business rules to support compliance, traceability, and reuse.
Data Cataloging & Discoverability
+ Lead the implementation and ongoing management of enterprise data cataloging tools.
+ Ensure all critical R&D datasets, data products, and master data entities are indexed, searchable, and properly described.
+ Collaborate with data stewards and product owners to continuously enrich catalog content and improve user experience.
Data Quality & Compliance
+ Define and monitor KPIs for data quality, completeness, and compliance across domains.
+ Partner with Master Data Management to ensure harmonization of shared entities (e.g., compounds, studies, patients, sites).
+ Collaborate with Legal, Privacy, and Compliance to enforce regulatory requirements (GDPR, HIPAA, GxP).
Collaboration & Integration
+ Work closely with Knowledge Management, Data Products, and Platform teams to integrate governance, metadata, and cataloging capabilities into broader R&D workflows.
+ Partner with IT (JJT) and external vendors to evaluate and deploy best-in-class tools and technologies.
Communication & Value Realization
+ Communicate governance, metadata, and cataloging priorities, metrics, and value realization to executive leadership.
+ Champion a culture of data literacy, promoting the benefits of discoverable, well-documented, and well-governed data.
Strategic Impact
+ The Director, Data Governance, Metadata & Cataloging ensures R&D data is governed, documented, and discoverable, providing the foundation for trusted insights, regulatory compliance, and advanced analytics. By embedding governance, metadata, and cataloging into daily operations, this role transforms data from a fragmented asset into a connected, findable, and AI-ready enterprise resource.
Qualifications
Education
+ Master’s or PhD in Information Management, Data Science, Life Sciences, or related discipline.
Skills &** **Expertise
+ 8–10+ years of experience in data governance, metadata managementin pharma/biotech or regulated industries.
+ Proven success in implementing governance frameworks and metadata/cataloging tools at scale.
+ Deep understanding of governance principles, metadata management, cataloging, and FAIR data.
+ Familiarity with ontologies, semantic standards, and data lineage frameworks.
+ Experience with data cataloging platforms and metadata repositories.
+ Strong leadership, stakeholder engagement, and change management skills.
+ Excellent communication and ability to demonstrate governance and metadata as enablers of business/science value.

The anticipated base pay range for this position is :
The anticipated base pay range for this position is $160,000 to $276,000 USD.
Additional Description for Pay Transparency:
Subject to the terms of their respective plans, employees and/or eligible dependents are eligible to participate in the following Company sponsored employee benefit programs: medical, dental, vision, life insurance, short- and long-term disability, business accident insurance, and group legal insurance. Subject to the terms of their respective plans, employees are eligible to participate in the Company’s consolidated retirement plan (pension) and savings plan (401(k)). This position is eligible to participate in the Company’s long-term incentive program.
