    Description

The City of Reno has an exciting opportunity for a paid internship in the Council Relations Division of the City Manager's Office. This program offers students a hands-on introduction to local government, providing direct support to the City Council Relations team and opportunities to engage in meaningful public service.

Interns will gain experience in government operations, public communication, and community engagement while building professional skills in research, writing, and problem-solving. Selected candidates may also enroll in a for-credit internship course through an accredited University or College. This program is approved under University of Nevada guidelines, where interns may receive 1 credit for every 40 hours worked (typically 3 credits/120 hours per semester).

Interns will generally work about 10 hours per week, with some evening and weekend availability required to assist with public meetings and community events

    Examples of Essential Functions

Interns will work alongside and support the Council Relations Team in a variety of ways. They will assist with preparation and staffing of City Council and Neighborhood Advisory Board (NAB) meetings, which includes meeting logistics, welcoming attendees, supporting public comment, and helping staff ensure smooth facilitation of public participation. Interns will also conduct research on community issues, Council initiatives, and best practices in local government; support public communication and outreach by drafting talking points, proofreading materials, and helping prepare newsletters, fact sheets, and presentations; and assist with community engagement projects such as surveys, special events, and neighborhood programs.

Additional responsibilities include providing customer service support by helping respond to public inquiries, connecting residents with City resources, and contributing to special projects that promote transparency, enhance public understanding of City services, and advance Council priorities.

Lastly, since NAB meetings take place in the evenings (Mondays, Tuesdays, and Thursdays), interns should expect some evening availability and be able to travel to meeting venues throughout the community.

    Minimum Qualifications

We recognize that interns may bring a wide range of educational and professional experiences, and we welcome applicants from both academic and non-academic paths.

    • Enrollment in upper-division courses at an accredited university or college is desirable, but not required; applicants with other relevant experience are strongly encouraged to apply

    • Effective interpersonal skills and strong writing ability

    • Proficiency with computer applications such as Microsoft Office

    • Excellent organizational skills, attention to detail, and self-motivation

    • Ability to work collaboratively in a team environment

    • Strong customer service skills, including professional communication and phone etiquette

    • Interest in local government and community needs such as planning, financial management, technology systems, or civic engagement

    • Bilingual Spanish-English highly preferred

    • Possession of a valid driver’s license required
