    Director, CLASS Laboratory

    Job Summary

    The University of Michigan seeks a dynamic and experienced Director to lead the CLASS Laboratory. The successful candidate will oversee all laboratory operations, with an emphasis on maintaining current services, ensuring continuity in long-term projects, particularly the Study of Women's Health Across the Nation (SWAN) grant, and upholding the highest standards in assay development, biospecimen management, and client engagement.

     

    The Director will play a critical leadership role in supporting ongoing scientific and clinical collaborations and ensuring that the CLASS Laboratory continues to operate as a trusted, CAP accredited resource for research and diagnostics.

    Responsibilities*

    + **Laboratory Management**

    + Oversee the day-to-day operations of the CLASS lab.

    + Supervise research and support personnel and conduct training in laboratory methods and procedures.

    + Supervise the manufacture specimen collection kits for multiple research projects.

    + Supervise assay performance for multiple research projects.

    + **Assay Development & Methodology**

    + Select and approve appropriate assay methodologies aligned with the Laboratory service model.

    + Oversee the onboarding and implementation of new assay techniques and equipment.

    + Lead and manage current and future immunoassay development projects.

    + **Biorepository Oversight**

    + Manage a College of American Pathologists (CAP) accredited biorepository.

    + Ensure appropriate response protocols to freezer or power outages, and lead compliance and renewal processes for BAP accreditation.

    + Advise on biospecimen collection standards and protocols, ensuring best practices based on the intended scientific use.

    + **Financial Management & Recharge Program**

    + Design and regularly update rates for Assay and Kit Recharge, in compliance with the institution's recharge program policies.

    + Generate invoices for non-routine Laboratory services and ensure accurate and timely billing.

    + Monitors recharge cost reimbursement budgets.

    + **Grant & Client Collaboration**

    + Foster and maintain collaborative relationships with internal and external clients.

    + Provide consultation and technical support to researchers utilizing CLASS Laboratory services, promoting high quality research outcomes.

    + Maintain the current scope of services offered by the CLASS Laboratory.

    + Uphold and manage existing collaborative and contractual relationships, with particular focus on the SWAN grant and its ongoing requirements

    + Author and co-author publications, collaborates with other researchers on manuscripts, abstracts and other publications of research findings. May co-present with Principal Investigator at meetings and conferences.

    Required Qualifications*

    + Advanced degree (PhD, MD, or equivalent) in biomedical sciences, clinical laboratory sciences, or a related field.

    + 6+ years of research laboratory experience with biospecimen collection and handling protocols.

    + Proven experience in laboratory management, including assay development and biorepository oversight.

    + Familiarity with grant management and compliance processes.

    + Familiarity with long-term research projects involving biospecimens and longitudinal data.

    + Knowledge of CAP accreditation standards and procedures.

    + Demonstrated ability to manage budgets and service recharges in a research or clinical Laboratory setting.

    + Strong interpersonal and communication skills, with a collaborative leadership style.

    Desired Qualifications*

    + Experience working in an academic or clinical research environment.

    + Background in immunoassay development and validation.

    Positions that are eligible for hybrid or mobile/remote work mode are at the discretion of the hiring department. Work agreements are reviewed annually at a minimum and are subject to change at any time, and for any reason, throughout the course of employment.     This position supports a hybrid work schedule.

     

    Additional Information

     

    This is a term-limited appointment that will end one year from appointment start date, with the potential for an extension depending upon available funding and performance.
