Construction estimator skills and qualifications

A successful construction estimator will have the following skills:

+ Preparing estimates of labor, material costs, general expenses and overheads

+ Operating computer software programs

+ Reading and interpreting blueprints, maps, drawings and project specifications

+ Understanding and being able to advise on the tendering process

+ Setting up cost monitoring and reporting systems

+ Maintaining a directory of suppliers and trade contractors

+ Collaborating with engineers, architects, owners and contractors

+ Supporting both greenfield and brownfield projects

Suitable candidates will have one of the following Qualifications:

+ Bachelor's degree in construction management, engineering, or a related field

+ Certification from a recognized professional body, such as Certified Professional Estimator (CPE)

+ Trade Journeyman Certificate and 5+ years of experience in construction estimating

Other Qualifications and Skills:

+ 10+ years of previous experience in construction estimating

+ Proficiency in using industry standard software such as PlanSwift, On-Screen Takeoff, ProEst and Bluebeam Revu

+ Strong understanding of construction methods and materials

+ Excellent mathematical and analytical skills

+ Ability to read and interpret blueprints and technical drawings

+ Strong communication and negotiation skills

+ Detail-oriented with strong organizational skills

+ Ability to work under pressure and meet tight deadlines

+ Familiarity with local building codes and regulations

+ Strong understanding of construction practices, materials, and cost estimating techniques

+ Excellent organizational, time management, and interpersonal skills

+ Ability to work independently and as part of a team

+ Attention to detail and strong analytical skills
