    Job Summary

Oregon State University’s Hermiston Agricultural Research and Extension Center ( HAREC ) invites applications for a full-time (1.0 FTE ), 9-month tenure-track Assistant Professor position.

This position will be located at the HAREC , with an academic home in the Department of Horticulture in the College of Agricultural Sciences ( CAS ). This position has an assignment as a Resilient Agricultural Systems Extension Specialist with a statewide assignment. The primary purpose of this position is to develop and lead a nationally and internationally recognized research and extension program in horticulture that addresses current issues related to sustainable agriculture and development of resilient cropping systems. Areas of research specific to disciplinary and stakeholder needs may include those seeking to mitigate risk due to environmental stressors (e.g., drought, temperature, etc.) through the incorporation of new traits, crops, or management practices that promote beneficial soil functions and crop productivity (e.g., incorporation of new specialty crops or varieties, irrigation, crop nutrition). Specialty crops may include onions, carrots, sweet corn, leafy vegetables, peas, and melons to complement existing potato research efforts at HAREC . The candidate will be responsible for supporting HAREC’s mission and commitment to irrigated agriculture within the Columbia Basin. A successful candidate will apply this knowledge to improve the region’s ability to prevent, mitigate, prepare for and respond to climate perturbations resulting in more resilient agricultural systems and economies.

The incumbent will develop an applied research and extension program to deliver research-based solutions to support sustainable farming that is based on clientele needs. Effective communication with key stakeholders is critical to the success of this position, as is cooperation and collaboration with clientele groups, staff and faculty at HAREC , Corvallis and other universities regarding crop production systems, research and extension projects, with emphasis on projects of particular interest to local and regional stakeholders. The incumbent must actively pursue outside funding sources through grants and other mechanisms to support their research and extension program. After year 3, the incumbent will be expected to fund an additional 2 months of salary from grants and contracts so it is necessary to be successful in obtaining extramural funding. It will also be critical to develop partnerships with colleagues to leverage funds and contribute to professional knowledge in crop production systems as well as student training and teaching.

Oregon State University and CAS are committed to creating and maintaining compassionate and inclusive learning and working environments for all learners, visitors, and employees. All employees are responsible for achieving this commitment. There is an expectation that, as part of your role in the college, you embody and advance the principles and practices conveyed in the CAS CARE Commitment document (https://agsci.oregonstate.edu/sites/agscid7/files/main/for-faculty/care.pdf) . Research and extension programming must be designed, maintained, and/or carried out to ensure that all people have equal employment and program participation opportunities regardless of race, color, religion, sex, sexual orientation, gender identity or expression, genetic information, national origin, age, marital status, disability, or veteran’s status.

The incumbent will be directly responsible to the HAREC Director with input from the Horticulture Department Head. Decisions should support the missions of the HAREC , Department or Horticulture, and CAS .
