    This internship is for undergraduate students in support of the Durham Police Department. The student intern will have the opportunity to receive a realistic depiction of what the Police Department does on a daily basis. Also, it will help the student develop and determine where their career interest may lie while earning college credits.

     

    Position description will vary based on the department’s needs.

    Duties/Responsibilities

    The duties and responsibilities vary from student to student based on their course work.

    Student interns will get to experience different units such as:

    Ride Along With Uniform Patrol:

    During a police ride-along, an intern will typically:

    + Observe the officer's daily duties, such as patrolling, responding to calls for service, and conducting traffic stops.

    + Ask questions about the officer's job and the criminal justice system.

    + Learn about the department's policies and procedures.

    + Gain experience in emergency situations and assist the officer with non-enforcement tasks, such as paperwork or filing.

    Criminal Investigations:

    Gain experience in Criminal Investigation:

    + Assist the Investigator with non-enforcement tasks, such as paperwork or filing.

    + Learn the different types of investigations that are in the Durham Police Department.

     

    Crime Analysis

    By shadowing a police crime analyst, an intern can learn about some of the following:

    + The different types of crime data that are collected by law enforcement agencies.

    + How to use crime data to identify trends and patterns and how to develop crime prevention strategies.

    + In addition to these general skills, interns who shadow police crime analysts may also learn about specific software programs and tools that are used for crime analysis. They may also have the opportunity to participate in projects that involve data collection, analysis, and reporting.

    Community Services:

    While an intern is with the Community Service Unit they may do and learn about the following:

    + The different types of community service programs that are offered by police departments.

    + How to develop and implement community outreach programs.

    + How to work with community partners to address crime and social problems.

     

    In addition to these general skills, interns who shadow the Durham Police Community Services Unit may also learn about specific programs and initiatives that are being implemented in their community. They may also have the opportunity to participate in projects that involve community engagement, crime prevention, and social service delivery.

    Forensics:

    Interns with The Durham Police Department Forensics Unit can expect to learn about the following:

    + The different types of forensic science disciplines, such as DNA analysis, fingerprint analysis, and crime scene investigation.

    + The tools and techniques used in forensic science.

    + The importance of evidence collection and preservation and the role of forensic science in the criminal justice system.

     

    In addition to these general skills, interns who work with Police Forensics Units may also have the opportunity to participate in projects that involve processing crime scenes and analyzing evidence.

     

    Minimum Qualifications & Experience

     

    + Must be at least 18 years old.

    + Enrolled in an accredited two (2) or four (4) year academic institution and classified as a freshman, sophomore, junior or senior.

    + Must be in good standing academically with your college or university.

     

    Additional Preferred Skills

     

    + Must be available to work at least 20 hours per week and up to 37.5 hours.

    + Must be available to work between 8:00am until 4:30pm Monday through Friday.
