Position Summary:
The FAU Charles E. Schmidt College of Medicine seeks a highly skilled and motivated Chair of Surgery to join our dynamic team, playing a key leadership role responsible for providing strategic direction, administrative oversight, and clinical leadership within the Department of Surgery. This position plays a crucial role in shaping the surgical department's vision, enhancing patient care, and fostering an environment of academic excellence.
The mission of the Schmidt College of Medicine is to advance the health and well-being of our region and beyond by delivering advanced academic medical care, training future generations of humanistic clinicians and scientists and fostering scholarship and discovery through research. We are committed to providing educational programs, in partnership with our clinical affiliates, that enable our medical students and residents to become active, self-directed, life-long learners; equip our graduates to effectively treat the patients that they are most likely to encounter in their practices; produce graduates with the knowledge, skills, attitudes, and self-awareness required to practice effective evidence-based medicine; emphasize the centrality of collaborative relationships in the provision of the highest quality comprehensive health care; and foster and value of collaboration among medical specialties, and between academic and community health care professionals.
The Chair of Surgery - Associate/Full Professor will have the following specific responsibilities, to be performed, as appropriate, in coordination with the Dean’s Office:
Leadership and Administration:
+ Provide visionary leadership to the Department of Surgery, setting and executing strategic goals in alignment with the College of Medicine’s mission and objectives.
+ Oversee and coordinate all aspects of the Department of Surgery, including budgeting, resource allocation, staffing, and quality improvement initiatives.
+ Collaborate with other department chairs, hospital medical staff, and clinical administration to ensure seamless integration of surgical services across all partnerships.
Clinical Oversight:
+ Build and oversee the surgical clinical practice at all appropriate partner sites, with emphasis on delivery of advanced and innovative academic surgical care.
+ Maintain a clinical practice to remain current with evolving surgical techniques and serve as a role model for clinical excellence.
+ Establish and maintain high standards of patient care, ensuring compliance with established clinical protocols, best practices, and regulatory requirements across the department.
Academic and Research Leadership:
+ Build clinical research in surgery across partner sites, including recruiting faculty who have an interest and success in surgical research.
+ Foster an environment of academic excellence by promoting scholarly activities, research initiatives, and continuing medical education for surgical faculty and residents.
+ Support the general surgery residency and fellowship programs and collaborate with the Program Directors to ensure accreditation and educational standards are met.
+ Establish subspecialty level academic divisions and training programs.
+ Support career advising for medical students and work to address the needs of UME learners, including research and clinical opportunities.
Faculty Development and Mentorship:
+ Recruit, mentor, and retain a talented team of surgical faculty, fostering professional growth and development.
+ Provide guidance and resources to facilitate faculty research, publications, and academic pursuits.
+ Develop and implement strategies to promote faculty development consistent with evolving LCME standards and in alignment with the College’s strategic plan.
+ Assess productivity of department faculty and assist in compiling and analyzing faculty workload information.
+ Ensure timely completion of faculty assignments and evaluations.
+ Ensure adherence to faculty by-laws and work collaboratively to resolve faculty issues.
Collaboration and Community Engagement:
+ Promote a culture of professionalism, innovation, and evidence-based practice within the surgical department and across all partner sites.
+ Cultivate strong relationships with referring physicians, community organizations, and other healthcare providers to enhance patient access and continuity of care.
+ Represent the surgical department in various hospital committees and community outreach activities.
Quality Improvement and Patient Safety:
+ Lead efforts to continually improve surgical outcomes, patient satisfaction, and safety protocols within the department.
+ Collaborate with quality and safety teams to implement best practices and ensure compliance with regulatory standards.
Professional Development and Continuous Learning:
+ Maintain clinical certifications and licensure.
+ Stay up to date with advances in medical education, program requirements, and accreditation standards. Engage in ongoing professional development through participation in conferences, workshops, and educational forums.
+ Perform other duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications:
• M.D. or D.O. from an accredited institution and credentials that merit appointment at the rank of Associate Professor or higher.
• A Florida medical license or eligibility for Florida licensure and Board certification in Surgery.
• Progressive academic and clinical leadership (e.g., Division Chief, Vice Chair, or Chair) within an academic medical center or healthcare system.
• Demonstrated success as a clinically-active faculty member in an academic setting.
• Excellent communication and interpersonal skills to effectively interact with residents, faculty, staff, and external stakeholders.
• Strong ethical and professional conduct.
• Track record of academic achievement, including publications and involvement in research projects.
