Job Title: Electrical Controls Engineer
Job Description:
We are seeking an experienced Electrical Controls Engineer who will be responsible for designing automation control systems from customer specifications and developing electrical drawings. The role involves programming automation and control systems using PLCs, HMIs, VFDs, servos, vision systems, and more. You will specify electrical equipment and materials, troubleshoot hardware and software issues, design and debug Data Acquisition systems (SCADA), and manage the power-up, debugging, and calibration of control systems in the water/wastewater, automotive, and manufacturing sectors.
Responsibilities:
+ Design automation control systems from customer specifications.
+ Develop electrical drawings.
+ Program automation and control systems involving PLCs, HMIs, VFDs, servos, and vision systems.
+ Specify electrical equipment and materials based on calculations, customer specifications, and engineering principles.
+ Troubleshoot hardware and software issues quickly.
+ Design and debug Data Acquisition systems (SCADA).
+ Power-up, debug, and calibrate water/wastewater and/or automotive manufacturing control systems.
+ Follow all company processes, checklists, and support the development of standardized design platforms.
Essential Skills:
+ Proficiency in PLC programming, particularly with Rockwell GLx, CLx, and PLC5.
+ Experience in automotive or conveyor or comparable controls.
+ Ability to diagnose problems and make program changes as needed.
+ Demonstrated troubleshooting skills.
+ Bachelor’s or Technical degree or certificate in a controls-related field (Electrical Engineering) or five years of applicable experience.
Additional Skills & Qualifications:
+ Proficient in programming PLCs from manufacturers like Rockwell, Siemens, and GE/Emerson.
+ Experience in programming HMI/SCADA systems such as Factory Talk, Ignition, and Cimplicity.
+ Hands-on industrial electrical experience and troubleshooting, including 480VAC 3-phase, 120 VAC, 24VDC systems.
+ Ability to read, revise, and create new logic, HMI/SCADA programs, and VFD parameters.
+ Experience with conveyor systems including Skid, Skillet, Pallet, Friction Drive, EMS, Power & Free.
+ Willingness to work various shifts and overtime.
+ Logical thinker and problem solver, organized and detail-oriented.
+ Strong verbal and written communication skills.
Work Environment:
This position requires full-time onsite work at Newport News Shipyard. The office in Norfolk includes a small team of four employees, each working on different projects. The role demands independence and the ability to operate on your own within this dynamic work environment.
Pay and Benefits
The pay range for this position is $50.00 - $72.00/hr.
