    Essential Job Functions

     

    + Supervises and participates in the daily care of animals and birds of prey, owls, hawks, falcons, reptiles and mammals exhibited at a nature center.

    + Feeds and waters animals and birds, determines the proper apportionment of food.

    + Cleans, disinfects and provides general upkeep of mews, enclosures, cages and feeding equipment.

    + Maintains good physical appearance and comfort of animals by, trimming talons, coping breaks, and performing related duties.

    + Inspects animals for disease or injury, assists in administering first aid treatment, and ensures special care prescribed by veterinarians is provided as indicated.

    + Moves animals from one enclosure to another as required, prepares animals for transportation, and may transport animals from park.

    + Assists in planning and conducting educational programs and special events exhibiting animal ambassadors.

    + Enforces safety regulations for park visitors in proximity of animal exhibits.

    + Develops and provides information to park visitors regarding exhibited animals.

    + Plans and schedules work in relation to park hours and anticipated peak visiting periods.

    + Trains and supervises helpers to properly care for and feed exhibited animals.

    + Orders and maintains inventory of supplies used in the feeding and care of animals.

    + Complies with animal regulations imposed by federal, state and local jurisdictions.

    Requirements

    REQUIREMENTS TO QUALIFY:

    TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE:

    One year of paid experience caring for exhibit animals — such as birds of prey, native mammals, reptiles, amphibians, or other animal ambassadors — in a zoo, animal sanctuary, rehabilitation center or similar setting.

    LICENSE:

    A valid California Class C Driver License or the ability to utilize an alternative method of transportation to carry out job-related essential functions may be required.

    PHYSICAL CLASS:

    Physical Class III – Moderate: This class requires that the incumbent stand or walk most of the time with bending, stooping, squatting, twisting, reaching, working on irregular surfaces, occasional lifting of objects weighing over 25 pounds, and frequent lifting of 10-25 pounds.

    DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS:

    + Additional years of paid or volunteer experience beyond the Minimum Requirements

    + A valid state-issued Falconry License*

    + Experience with training staff and developing training protocols with restricted species

    Examination Content:

    The examination will consist of an evaluation of experience and desirable qualifications based on application information and supplemental questionnaire, weighted 100%.

     

    You must meet the requirements and achieve a passing score of 70% or higher in order to be placed on the eligible register.

     

    Applications will be processed on an as-received basis and promulgated to the eligible register accordingly.

    Candidates who passed the assessment are placed on a register in the order of their score group for a period of twelve (12) months. We will use this list to fill vacancies as they occur.
