    Job Summary

    Performs journeyman level work in the installation, maintenance, modification, overhaul, service, and repair of University distributed plant heating, ventilation, air conditioning, refrigeration equipment. Responsible for performing preventive maintenance tasks of HVAC systems.

     

    Primary Duties and Responsibilities

     

    + Performs duties as requested by maintenance work orders upon request by all University personnel and students.

    + Works with HVAC Technician or HVAC II level employes and contractors to calibrate and repairs pneumatic and DDC controls and regulates gauges and controls to proper settings for desired temperatures and humidity.

    + Repairs residential and some commercial HVAC equipment and replaces thermostats, pneumatic/DDC controls key components, compressors, motors, adding or replacement of refrigerant and air compressors. Performs scheduled preventative maintenance, changing of oil and filters, inspecting condensers, washing coils, greasing pump and motor bearings, and repairs pumps.

    + Maintains and repairs air handling equipment to include replacement of belts, bearings, and filters; washes cooling and heating coils; and inspects dampers and motors.

    + Problem solves issues with chillers. Abilities to change settings on chillers panels, check alarms, and report issues with VFDs and Boilers. Required to read alarm codes on chillers, Boilers, VFD and Booster pumps and make repairs within skill level. Able to make basic changes to Chiller panels.

    + Serves as a member of the Physical Plant Essential Personnel and as directs staff during pre-emergency preparations and post-emergency recovery efforts. This position will require participation in call-out responsibilities and may require night shift coverage and weekend work.

    + Other duties as assigned.

    Minimum Qualifications

    High school diploma or general education degree (GED) and two years related experience and/or training with commercial HVAC equipment operation such as chillers, air handlers, pumps, boilers, and variable air volume units.; or equivalent combination of education and experience. EPA Section 608 Universal Refrigeration Handling Certification or the ability to take and pass an exam to receive the certification. Valid Driver’s License required. Must be eligible to receive a Transportation Worker Identification Credential (TWIC) card upon employment.

     

    Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

     

    + Knowledge of, or the ability to learn, University policies and procedures.

    + Knowledge of the function of mechanical HVAC systems design to condition the air in university buildings and spaces.

    + Knowledge of building automation system controls systems.

    + Ability to work independently and mange time.

    + Ability to obtain and maintain EPA Universal Refrigeration Handling Certification.

    + Ability to operate personal computer with general understanding of application software, and an understanding of the internet.

    + Ability to work with contractors to repair equipment outside of one’s skill level.

    + Ability to install equipment, machines, wiring, or programs to meet specifications.

    + Ability to perform maintenance, to follow instructions, and to interpret drawings and diagrams.

    + Ability to work evenings, nights and weekends as necessary.

    + Ability to respond quickly to emergencies.

    + Ability to demonstrate basic mechanical aptitude and functions of maintenance tools and equipment.

    Preferred Qualifications

    Previous work experience with Siemens Insight, Siemens Desigo, TRANE, Johnson Facility Explorer, and Niagara AX control systems. Certifications or Training for installation and programming of various control systems such as Facility Explorer, Metasys, Niagara AX, and/or TRANE.
