The County of Nevada, Office of Emergency Services is offering TWO internship opportunities in partnership with the Nevada Joint Union High School District. Students enrolled in the CTE program are welcome to apply!
Time Commitment:3 to 6 hours a week with flexible days, Monday through Friday. The position may require occasional after-hours or weekend work for outreach events.
The Opportunities:
The Nevada County Office of Emergency Services (OES) invites youth ages 14-18 to apply for an exciting opportunity as a paid student intern! This temporary position will be with the Nevada County Office of Emergency Services located in the County Eric Rood Administrative Building and will report directly to the Nevada County Wildfire Coordinator. The duration of the position is early October 2025 – early June 2026 (school year).
The Nevada County Office of Emergency Services is responsible for helping the community be prepared for disasters such as wildfires and winter storms. Under the supervision of OES staff, the student intern will help OES implement the 2024/2025 Disaster Engagement Strategy so that all members of the Nevada County community are prepared for emergency events.
Opportunity 1:
During the internship, the selected applicant will work with OES and County staff to help design and develop multiple education campaigns for emergency preparedness such as Ready Nevada County, Youth Preparedness, Ready, Set, Snow! and River Safety. The intern will also implement summer preparedness education campaigns and events developed by the previous OES 2024/2025 Youth Emergency Preparedness Intern. The intern will be introduced to a variety of professional experts and be exposed to career-building opportunities such as public relations, marketing and event planning, policy development, community engagement, and outreach initiatives. The intern will be paired with OES and County staff to job shadow and contribute to the deployment of the 2024/2025 Disaster Engagement Strategy. This student internship provides teens with an opportunity to develop workforce readiness skills, learn about emergency preparedness, and navigate the hiring process which will benefit them with future job applications.
Examples of Duties:
Examples of the types of work to be performed include but are not limited to the following primary assignments:
+ Assist with implementing the 2024/2025 Disaster Engagement Strategy by researching engagement strategies for new outreach initiatives and inventorying current engagement efforts.
+ Assist with designing and creating new outreach materials such as flyers, social media posts, press releases, and swag.
+ Assist OES staff with various events such as Firewise Community events and markets.
+ Complete a Capstone Project consisting of producing an outreach event including event planning, coordinating supplies, creating marking materials, and other related event planning tasks.
Knowledge and Skills Required:
+ Ideal candidates should have strong organizational skills and experience with conducting general research.
+ Able to share feedback and ideas and feel comfortable with public speaking to a variety of audiences.
+ Experience with creating presentations and reports.
+ Enthusiastic about working with the community and able to work collaboratively in a team setting.
+ Students will be expected to communicate scheduling needs clearly.
Opportunity 2:
During the internship, the selected applicant will work with OES and County staff to help support community mitigation projects, public outreach, and education campaigns for wildfire mitigation such as defensible space, fuel reduction, and more. The intern will also collaborate with the OES Youth Emergency Preparedness Outreach Intern on youth preparedness messaging. The intern will be introduced to a variety of professional experts and be exposed to career-building opportunities such as public relations, defensible space, wildfire mitigation, grant projects, policy development, community engagement, and outreach initiatives. The intern will be paired with OES and County staff to job-shadow and contribute to the deployment of the 2025/2026 Disaster Engagement Strategy. This student internship provides teens with an opportunity to develop workforce readiness skills, learn about emergency preparedness, and navigate the hiring process which will benefit them with future job applications.

+ Assist defensible space inspectors and OES staff with photo documentation of completed work.
+ Assist with community education around various wildfire mitigation projects.

+ Collaborate with the OES Outreach Intern on youth education.
+ Complete a Capstone Project consisting of producing youth-oriented wildfire mitigation guide.
