    About this Position

     

    The primary function of this position is to operate heavy equipment for the purposes of road maintenance and construction. This position is located in District 62, Unit 760 of the Department of Transportation and Development and reports directly to the Highway Foreman 2. The incumbent must be self-motivated and be able to perform duties with minimal supervision and able to interpret unforeseen conditions as they may arise. The incumbent will participate in appropriate DOTD structured training programs and attend all continuing education classes and conferences deemed necessary to facilitate the performance of required tasks. While in official capacity, DOTD employees must comply with applicable Louisiana and Civil Service laws, rules, and regulations, as well as DOTD policies, procedures, manuals, and directives.

     

    THIS POSITION IS PART OF A HEAVY ROAD MAINTENANCE CREW THAT IS RESPONSIBLE FOR USING VARIOUS HAND TOOLS, OPERATING HEAVY EQUIPMENT AND DUMP TRUCKS FOR ASPHALT AND MILLING OPERATIONS, INSTALLING LARGE CROSS DRAIN CULVERTS, ASSISTING WITH EROSION REPAIR JOBS AND VARIOUS BUILDING MAINTENANCE PROJECTS.

    Job Duties:

    + Operates the following heavy equipment, as needed:

    + Asphalt Distributor (truck mounted)

    + Backhoes

    + Front end loaders

    + Bucket/ladder trucks

    + Cranes/draglines (lifting capacity >20,000 lbs but <40,000 lbs

    + Dozers (<140 HP)

    + Dump truck (tandem axle or trailer dump)

    + Gradalls

    + Hot mix pavers (<40 HP)

    + Lowboys

    + Milling machines (<90 HP)

    + Road planer

    + Road widener (<90 HP)

    + Sewer Cleaners (truck mounted)

    + Striping machines

    + Sweepers

    + Track hoes (excavators)

    + Under bridge inspection units (trailer mounted)

    + Winch Truck

    + Motor Patrol/Grade

    + Operates track hoe, dozer, tracked loader, and front end loader to stockpile, spread and/or compact soils/granular materials, clear ditches and other drainage channels, remove tree stumps from highway right-of-way, clear brush and debris from under bridge decks. Operates track-hoe to install, repair or replace drainage structures, catch basin junction boxes, and load materials. Operates front-end loader to move soil, granular material, broken concrete, Rip-Rap for erosion control. Operates tandem axle dump trucks to haul asphalt, soil, and various types and sizes of granular material. Provide guidance to lower level operators and may oversee activities of the unit in the absence of the Highway Foreman 2.

    + Makes minor repairs on equipment and performs preventative maintenance in order to maintain equipment in good operating condition. Operates smaller equipment, power tools and hand tools as necessary.

    + May be required to perform other duties as necessary including, but not limited to, emergency/ disaster support

    Position-Specific Details:

    Appointment Type: This position may be filled as a Probationary Appointment requiring 12-24 months on probation.

     

    Work Schedule:The work schedule for this position is, 10-hour days, 4 days a week, off Monday or Friday.

     

    Compensation: See below for starting hourly rate for the Mobile Equipment Heavy 1.

     

    + M OBILE EQUIPMENT OPERATOR 1/HEAVY - Class A Commercial Driver's License (CDL) will be required upon appointment.

     

    Starting salary for MEO 1-HEAVY is $21.05/hour.
