    Our Mission

    Our mission is to ensure the physical, operational and financial integrity of the regional flood risk management system, in southeastern Louisiana as a defense against floods and storm surge from hurricanes. We accomplish this mission by working with local, regional, state and federal partners to plan, design, construct, operate and maintain projects that will reduce the probability and risk of flooding for the residents and businesses within our jurisdiction.

    About this position

    The incumbent in this position provides a full range of police services for the Orleans Levee District by enforcing federal, state, and local laws through active mobile and/or foot patrols. The Police Sergeant supervises police officers on his assigned watch. Supervision is from a police official of a higher level, i.e., Police Lieutenant, and/or Police Captain. The Orleans Levee District jurisdictional area falls under the umbrella of the Southeast Louisiana Flood Protection Authority-East (SLFPA-E) and includes Jefferson Parish, New Orleans and St. Bernard parishes on the East Bank.

    Minimum Qualifications

    Three years of law enforcement experience.

    EXPERIENCE SUBSTITUTION:

    Every 30 semester hours earned from an accredited college or university will substitute for one year of the required experience. The maximum substitution allowed is 60 semester hours which substitutes for two years of experience.

    NECESSARY SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:

    Applicants must be at least 18 years of age.

     

    Possession of a current Louisiana driver's license.

     

    Possession of an active Peace Officer Standards and Training (POST) certification may be required.

     

    An applicant who has been convicted of a felony or who is under indictment on a felony charge will be disqualified until relief from the disabilities imposed by state and federal laws is granted.

    Job Duties and Other Information

    Job Duties:

    + Protects life and property, with an emphasis on law enforcement, crime prevention, crime and accident investigation and arranging emergency services. Incumbents patrol an assigned area on foot or in a vehicle to detect and prevent crime

    + Inspects and reports on the condition of 192 miles of earthen levees and floodwalls, 1400 acres of levee turf maintenance area, 200 land-based floodgates and 6 navigational floodgates, 3 permanent canal closures and pumps, and various valves along the levee system.

    + Responds to complaints/requests for law enforcement assistance. Investigates disturbances, suspicious activities, and crimes. Intervenes in situations, using force if necessary to restore order, to prevent interference with normal operations or to protect life and property. Empowered to make arrests if necessary. Interviews witnesses; identifies, collects and preserves evidence. Transports offenders to Central Lockup or turns them over to the appropriate authority. Completes all related reports regarding incidents.

    + Directly supervises Police Officers 2, and 3 and in the absence of the Lieutenant (watch commander), acts in the capacity of the Lieutenant, providing supervision for the assigned subordinates of the watch until such time as the Lieutenant returns to duty.

    + Handles complaints regarding subordinates, relaying information to supervisory personnel for review and determination of action to be taken

    + Attends in-service training to maintain minimum POST requirements. Training includes, but is not limited to: firearms training, first aid, PR 24 baton training, proper police equipment usage, and any further training that the department believes will enhance the officer's ability to perform his/her duties. Must complete the CPRA "Certified Levee Inspector" training program.

    Career Progression: This position does not participate in a Career Progression Group.

     

    Compensation: Full-time employees are eligible for a compressive benefits package, including participation in the state’s retirement plan, health insurance, agency-paid short-term disability coverage, paid holidays, and paid annual and sick leave.

     

    NOTE: The Orleans Levee District is an emergency-oriented agency. Part of the mission is to protect the residents of Orleans Parish from tidal surge, wind-driven water and river flooding. In emergencies during Mississippi River flooding and Hurricane Tropical Storm events, the incumbent will be on call and must report for duty if so required, remaining on duty in such situations until released from duty by the Appointing Authority.
