Responsibilities:
GENERAL PURPOSE
The department of Microbiology and Immunology is seeking a full-time Research Technician II to work in a basic science laboratory and conduct research relating to the bacteriophages in Staphylococcus aureus.
This individual will screen isolate bacteriophages, determine their host range, analyze the genomic sequence of bacterial strains and bacteriophages, and use genetic tools to modify bacteriphage. It is expected that the candidate will maintain a comprehensive laboratory notebook, present data at project team meetings, and develop independence over time in performing and designing the experiments.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
- Performs simple to moderate technical procedures and experiments according to specific instructions and protocols when initiating and conducting research experiments. Manages data and databases.
- Maintains records, reports, and inventory. Coordinates consent and assent. Administers individual interviews, surveys, and experimental protocols. May assist with the development of research protocols, including literature reviews. Performs general data collection during research studies. Records experimental data. Collects/tabulates/calculates data. Prepares solutions.
- Assists with purchasing routine lab supplies, collects receipts, and monitors expenditures. Installs, maintains, and repairs general equipment. May design modifications and fabricate mechanical or electronic equipment.
- May provide general support and supervision of lower-level technicians. Works closely with staff to understand the principles of compliance, confidentiality, and other ethical obligations involved in conducting research.
- May assist faculty and students in the use of equipment. Administers experiments as needed and provides analysis and interpretation of results as appropriate.
- Keeps current with industry standards, best practices, and trends in health sciences. Attends/participates in weekly lab meetings, and, as appropriate, institutes and seminars.
- Other duties as assigned.
MINIMUM EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE
+ High school diploma or GED Required
+ Bachelor’s degree in appropriate discipline Preferred.
+ Previous instruction in theoretical aspects of cell and molecular biology. Preferred
+ 1 year performing basic sampling, monitoring or research activities, compiling and collecting data and preparing reports or equivalent combination of education and experience Required
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES
+ Knowledge of OSHA safety requirement and scientific methods Required
+ Previous experience with basic bacterial cell culture techniques, molecular cloning techniques, DNA extraction and PCR, column chromatography, and genomic sequence analysis is highly desirable. Preferred
+ Ability to perform mathematical calculations using algebra and practically apply percentages, fractions, and ratios. Preferred
+ Strong attention to detail and ability to perform experiments with precision. Preferred
+ Ability to communicate effectively (including written communication); follow instructions exactly, and record information accurately. Preferred
