    Job Summary

    The Second Class Radiation Technician shall be responsible for maintaining the site Radiation Safety Standards and control of radioactive materials at the Station. Also, the Second Class Radiation Technician shall be able to perform routine radiation / contamination surveys, maintain associated records and perform those activities associated with radiation safety equipment. These activities include, radioactive source standard calibration of select portable radiation monitoring equipment, and the servicing of various types of respiratory protection equipment. All activities all subject to the general limitations of ANSI Standard 18.1.

    Job Description

    Duties and Responsibilities:

    + Responsible for assisting in maintaining the radiological safety of workers and the environment. Such actions shall be taken in accordance with site practices, policies, and procedures and for which the individual is qualified as identified in the "qualification matrix". It is expected that as an individual gains experience, they will attain additional qualifications to perform additional duties.

    + Perform radiological surveys as required to determine radiation, contamination, and airborne radioactivity levels. Use hand held and fixed radiation, contamination, and airborne radioactivity sampling / detection instrumentation. Such surveys do not include unconditional release or RWP prework surveys. Examples of permitted surveys are:

    + Obtain and analyze levels of removable contamination utilizing smears, swabs, or other approved techniques.

    + Obtain and analyze airborne radioactivity levels.

    + Perform dosimetry activities including TLD badge issue, completion of associated paperwork, and database entries.

    + Control worker access to RRAs / Radioactive Material Areas.

    + Perform pre-use inspections of HEPA ventilation equipment including evaluation of unit filters for change out.

    + Control _I_ direct the movement of radioactive material with radiation levels < I 00mR/br contact through Restricted, RRAs, and RMAs.

    + Evaluate contaminated materials, work areas and equipment to determine the need for decontamination.

    + Direct the decontamination of equipment and work areas.

    + As directed, performs area decontamination work.

    + Coach general radiation workers as necessary on Company / Site radiological, nuclear, and industrial safety practices, policies, and procedures.

    + Conduct pre-operation checks on all types of non permanent radiological instruments including hand held survey instruments, CAMS, PAMS, PCMs, PMs, SAMs, and TCMs.

    + Issue band held radiological instrumentation to qualified end users.

    + In accordance with instrument specific procedure limitations perform battery, cable, and external probe change outs on hand held radiological instruments. Such activities are limited to instruments that do not require re-calibration after such change outs.

    + Establish, inspect and maintain radiological postings. Initial response to radiological alarms including those from, CAMS, PCMs, PMs, SAMs, Friskers, RMS, ORMS, and EADs.

    + Setup and maintain contamination control points _I_ Step Off Pads.

    + Assist in the setup/ control of RAs, HRAs, LHRAs, VHRAs, and DPZs.

    + As directed issue special types of protective equipment to worker, this includes, anti-contamination clothing, respirators, HEPA equipment.

    + As directed or required complete log entries and paperwork.

    + As directed serve as team member for project teams such as refueling, and steam generator maintenance.

    + Carry out assignments while observing all requirements of the QA program, technical specifications, licensing requirements, availability of equipment, and support of the station ALARA program.

    + Receive work assignments and special instructions from their supervisor.

    + Receive periodic oversight from their supervisor or a higher level of supervision / management.

    + Provide periodic reports on work status.

    + Recommend changes to site radiological practices, policies, and procedures consistent with safe and efficient work.

    + Under the direct supervision / guidance of an RP supervisor/ first class radiation technician / lead radiation technician perform any other duties contained within the Radiation Protection "Qualification Matrix" for which they have been qualified. Any paperwork completed under this item requires a co-signature by the supervisor/ first class/ lead Radiation Technician providing such supervision / guidance.

    + Perform work on cleaning, inspection, and repair of respirators designated by RP supervision.

    + Operate fork trucks and other non-CDL vehicles.

    + Support movement of radioactive material within the Radiologically Controlled Area

    + As directed perform other duties related to the site Radiation Protection program.

    Education

    + High school diploma or equivalent

    + Must have completed or be able to complete an approved radiation protection training program, or be qualified in accordance with recognized industry standards such as the NEl model. The ability to complete the training program shall be demonstrated by successful passing of an entrance test.

    Special Skills and Qualifications:

    + Shall have qualifications as committed to by the company in compliance with applicable government guides, and ANSI standards. If these qualifications vary from those committed to by the company the company's commitment shall prevail.

    + Must have a valid state driver's license.

    + Obtain initial qualification and maintain qualification for the core job functions of a second class Radiation Technician in accordance with a FENOC INPO accredited training program.

    + After attaining 4000 hours RP experience, exclusive of time spent in a formal training environment, and successful completion of the general qualifications items for a first class Radiation technician as identified in the "qualification matrix" the individual will progress automatically to the level of a first class Radiation Technician. Time credit is limited to a maximum of 50 hours per week.
