    Job Summary

    Michigan Medicine is seeking a dynamic, visionary, and operationally-focused **Director of AI at Michigan Medicine** to drive the responsible and impactful implementation of artificial intelligence across our health system. Serving as a member of the leadership team and a key strategic and operational thought leader reporting directly to the Chief Innovation Officer, the AI Director will supervise an agile, multidisciplinary core team to advance Michigan's commitment to safe, ethical, and scalable AI solutions for our caregivers.

    AI at Michigan Medicine (AIMM) sits at the epicenter of a vibrant, interdisciplinary community at the University of Michigan, and is an operational unit dedicated to advancing AI across health system operations in partnership with many key stakeholders across the academic health system, including colleagues in research, education and patient care. With a strong emphasis on collaborative, cross-disciplinary operational execution, AIMM supports a diverse group of caregivers exploring the fundamental positive impact AI can have on our vision to be Leaders and Best, and the most consequential academic health system in the country - driving our mission to advance health to serve Michigan and the world.

     

    AIMM is seeking a dynamic and experienced Managing Director to establish and lead a core administrative team. This pivotal leadership role is responsible for translating AIMM's strategic vision into actionable operational plans, executing in partnership with many stakeholders across the health system to responsibly deploy AI models to solve real world challenges including provider and staff burnout and patient experience gaps.

     

    The AIMM Managing Director will oversee operations, partnerships to facilitate research on the impact of AI in health care, budgeting and financial stewardship, and resource allocation, guide staff deployment and performance management, and lead the implementation of governance structures and communications strategies. This individual will partner closely with the Chief Innovation Officer and designee to build a team to ensure institutional alignment, efficient use of resources, and sustained impact. The ideal candidate will bring strategic insight, technical expertise, leadership experience and a commitment to fostering a collaborative, high-performing environment.

    Responsibilities*

    Key Responsibilities

    Strategic Leadership & Institutional Planning:

    + Partner with the Chief Innovation Officer and designee to develop, maintain, and implement AI at Michigan Medicine's strategic and operations plans.

    + Enable the execution and contribute to the evolution of Michigan Medicine's AI strategic plan, ensuring initiatives align with institutional goals and enterprise priorities.

    + Establish and lead a centralized core unit of AI-focused multidisciplinary team members who will coordinate with coalition partners across research, clinical, IT, governance, compliance, and operations.

    + Develop tools for measuring impact of AI models to fuel future investment and philanthropy opportunities.

    + Share a vision for an AI-enabled workforce as we navigate change management and propel our caregivers to a future work state. Serve as a thought leader and advocate of responsible use of AI across the health system in partnership with our many multidisciplinary stakeholders.

    + Lead or coordinate AIMM-wide strategic initiatives, ensuring accountability benchmarks, alignment with staffing capacity, and scenario-based planning.

    + Serve as a voice and representative for AIMM at development events, media opportunities, and campus-wide initiatives.

    Responsible AI Governance:

    + Establish and manage rigorous processes for AI model review, monitoring, and mitigation of bias plans, and tools in partnership with IT, compliance, legal, risk offices and other key stakeholders.

    + Support the application ofresponsible AI use principles - prioritizing human oversight, transparency, and upholding our relentless commitment to patient safety and quality.

    + Work with Government Affairs teams to advocate for policies that protect our patients while enabling technological advancement in pursuit of our tripartite mission.

    Administrative & Operational Oversight:

    + Direct and oversee all administrative functions including budget development, financial management, human resources, space planning, procurement, and shared equipment.

    + Direct and oversee the implementation of high-impact AI projects (e.g., models supporting authorizations and reimbursement, ambient clinical documentation, revenue cycle optimization, contact center and shared services automation), developing foundational structures to enable scalability and broad impact of the models.

    + Establish and optimize tools to identify use cases for AI, aligning the work of the core AIMM team with organizational priorities.

    + Establish and optimize tools to manage a broad impact portfolio in partnership with key stakeholders and end users across the health system to develop relationships and partnership to advance the way we provide care to our patients and the communities we serve.

    + Establish and refine standard operating procedures for AIMM operations, ensuring efficiency, transparency, and alignment with university and health system policies.

    + Provide routine updates and maintain an institutional risk management portfolio including recommending mitigation tactics and building support by health system governance structures (Cabinet Board, Leadership Councils, Advisory Boards), ensuring effective engagement and decision-making.

    Finance & Resource Management:

    + Develop, monitor, and manage AIMM's operating budget.

    + Ensure compliance with university and health system financial policies and promote long-term financial sustainability.

    + Measure and communicate returns on investment for each portfolio project, helping drive organization-wide adoption of AI while ensuring strong fiscal stewardship.

    Education & Advocacy:

    + Develop AI literacy and competency through training and communication programs for caregivers and leadership, working with our organizational learning, training, and marketing/communications teams.

    + Serve as a key spokesperson and advocate for AI policy and responsible deployment, both internally and externally, in various governance presentations and committees.

    Collaboration & Partnership:

    + Establish, manage and supervise the AIMM team, including hiring, training, performance management, and professional development.

    + Ensure staff roles and goals are aligned with health system priorities through structured performance planning and development opportunities.

    + Establish a culture of accountability, collaboration, and continuous improvement.

    + Formalize and lead interdisciplinary AI/ML coalitions, incorporating research, technical, and business expertise.

    + Evaluate and engage external vendors and partners, establishing business and technical assessment criteria and supporting co-investment opportunities.

    + Develop co-development/co-investment models that drive value from our living lab environment and form partnerships that help to sustain our missions through alternative revenue streams.

    + Oversee implementation of AIMM's communications strategy alongside the Chief Innovation Officer, including website, newsletters, reports, and event promotion.

    + Partner with development officers and university advancement staff to support donor relations, fundraising initiatives, and alumni engagement.

    Required Qualifications*

    + Advanced degree in a relevant field (computer science, data science, engineering, healthcare or related field; PhD is a plus) or equivalent combination of education and experience.

    + Minimum of 7 years of progressively more responsible administrative experience, including leadership in an academic health system of staff and budget management.

    + Demonstrated ability to lead multi-disciplinary teams and operational implementation of large-scale data or AI initiatives with measurable outcomes.

    + Knowledge of university and health system policies, financial systems, and administrative processes.

    + Proven track record of supervision, performance management, and team alignment.

    + Commitment to upholding Michigan Medicine's mission, values, and guiding principles for innovation and patient-centered care.

    Desired Qualifications*

    + Innovative thinker and problem solver, who can fail fast and drive understanding and learning from the journey, someone who motivates curiosity and commitment in others, particularly the core AIMM team.

    + Demonstrated expertise in responsible AI, bias mitigation, data privacy/regulatory compliance, and operationalization of AI solutions.

    + Strong leadership, communication, and problem-solving skills.

    + Familiarity with cloud-native architectures, EHR integrations, and modern AI/ML platforms.

    + Experience collaborating with legal, compliance, and risk functions on AI oversight.

    + Experience in an academic medicine or interdisciplinary organizational setting.

    + Familiarity with AI vendor landscape and emerging healthcare technologies.

    + Experience with organizational transformation or startup initiatives within large systems.

    Background Screening

     

    Michigan Medicine conducts background screening and pre-employment drug testing on job candidates upon acceptance of a contingent job offer and may use a third party administrator to conduct background screenings.
