Responsibilities*
The Section of Plastic Surgery is seeking a Certified Physician’s Assistant (PA-C) to join a busy, collegial clinical group in the Department of Surgery.
The advanced practice provider (APP) will participate in all out-patient clinical activities of the Section of Plastic Surgery, including the pre-operative and post-operative evaluation and care of Plastic Surgery and Hand Surgery patients. The APP will work collaboratively with Section faculty and nursing to ensure timely patient access and maintain the highest standards of patient care. Specifically, the APP will: (i) conduct initial evaluations of patients; both in person and virtually (ii) provide outpatient pre & post-operative care; both in person and virtually and (iii) perform minor procedures in clinic both cosmetic and medical. (Botox, fillers, hand injections, minor surgical procedures, etc.) (iv) conduct ongoing return evaluation and management of patients.
The APP will conduct independent visits in person and virtually. Specific education and training, tailored to the candidate’s previous experience, will be provided by surgical Attending Physicians and APPs in the Section.
In consultation with attending surgeons, the APP may also:
+ Interview patients to obtain a detailed patient history
+ Perform and document physical examinations
+ Perform various cosmetic, diagnostic, therapeutic and minor surgical procedures in clinic
+ Order and interpret diagnostic testing and imaging.
+ Act as a patient liaison before and after operations to provide information and coordinate care
+ Assist with outpatient pre-op and post-operative care including MiChart In basket follow-up, telephone calls, e-visits, e-consults and medication refills.
+ Independently conduct in person and virtual outpatient evaluations of selected patients
+ Independently provide in person and virtual follow-up care of selected patients
+ Communicate and coordinate care with referring and consultant physicians.
+ Make appropriate referrals to internal and external providers and facilities.
+ Order and prescribe of medications in accordance with statutes, rules, and regulations of the State of Michigan
Required Qualifications*
+ Current license to practice as a Physician Assistant in the State of Michigan.
+ Satisfactory completion of a Physician Assistant program accredited by Accreditation Review Commission on Education for the Physician Assistant (ARC-PA) or one of its predecessor agencies, CAHEA or CAAHEP.
+ Certification by the National Commission on Certification for Physician Assistants (NCCPA).
+ State of Michigan Controlled Substance License required
+ Current DEA registration required
+ ACLS required (separate AHA approved BLS also required unless ACLS was completed through the UMHS Simulation Center).
* Employment is contingent upon successful completion of the credentialing and privileging process.

Desired Qualifications*
+ At least one (1) year of advanced practice provider (APP) caring for Plastic Surgery patients.
+ Two (2) or more years full time, direct patient care experience as an APP, in an inpatient or outpatient setting, within the past four (4) years.
+ One (1) year full time experience, within the past four (4) years, providing care as an APP to surgical patients.
+ Previous first assist OR experience
+ Demonstrated ability to perform the candidate?s role independently and with minimal supervision, as evidenced by interviews, recent performance appraisals and reference feedback.
+ Demonstrated ability to problem solve, prioritize, and delegate effective and efficiently in the delivery of patient care.
+ Comfort in dealing with complex clinical and social issues.
+ Ability to work with minimal supervision and as part of a collaborative multi-disciplinary team, including other specialists, surgical residents, and nurses.
+ Excellent interpersonal and customer service skills.
+ Interest in developing long-term relationships with patients.
Work Schedule
Hours: 40 hours per week
Shift/Hours/Days: Days: Day shift Monday through Friday, hours, and days variable to meet clinic needs.

Union Affiliation
This position is covered under the collective bargaining agreement between the U-M and the United Physician Assistants of Michigan Medicine (UPAMM), which contains and settles all matters with respect to wages, benefits, hours, and other terms and conditions of employment.
