    GENERAL FUNCTIONS

    Incumbent must establish effective rapport and communication with students, faculty, and staff. Responsible for providing in-person and virtual academic coaching sessions. Responsible for assessing academic and digital literacy needs, facilitating skill-building workshops, connecting students with campus resources, and tracking academic progress. The specialist collaborates with campus partners to deliver holistic support, fosters an inclusive and encouraging learning environment, and stays informed on best practices in adult education to continuously improve services and promote student retention and persistence. May be asked to perform a wide variety of tasks in order to support the adult student population. This position requires staff to provide services from the Batavia Campus.

    SPECIFIC RESPONSIBILITIES

    + Provide individual and/or group academic support sessions tailored to the needs of adult learners.

    + Help students develop effective time management, active learning strategies, study strategies, and goal-setting techniques.

    + Empower students to develop self-advocacy skills and confidently navigate the college experience.

    + Assess students' academic and digital literacy strengths and challenges, identify learning barriers, and recommend targeted resources and strategies for improvement.

    + Develop and deliver academic workshops on topics such as note-taking, digital literacy/fluency, exam preparation, writing skills, and online learning success.

    + Refer students to appropriate on campus support services (i.e., Learning Center, Counseling, Financial Aid, Library, Access and Accommodations, etc.).

    + Encourage and support students in effectively engaging with faculty and academic departments as needed.

    + Monitor students' academic performance, follow up with at-risk students, and maintain detailed records of student interactions and services provided.

    + Foster a flexible, positive, and inclusive environment that respects diverse backgrounds and learning preferences.

    + Build trusting relationships with adult learners to support retention and persistence.

    + Use data and feedback to assess and improve services for adult learners.

    + Maintain up-to-date knowledge of best practices in supporting adult leaners across approved course modalities and participate in professional development activities.

    + Perform other related duties as assigned.

    Job Requirements:

    EDUCATION

    Associate Degree Required; Bachelor degree preferred.

    EXPERIENCE

    Three years of academic advising/coaching, tutoring, and/or academic support experience (part-time or full-time) required; One year for candidates with a bachelor's degree. Two years of experience in a customer facing role preferred. Experience in other education settings acceptable, post-secondary education preferred.

    KNOWLEDGE SKILLS AND ABILITIES

    Ability to provide quality customer service. Excellent oral and written communication skills required. Must demonstrate commitment to diversity and inclusion as well as the ability to establish and maintain positive learning environments for students and collaborative relationships with colleagues. Incumbent must be mindful of and develop solutions that can accommodate all individuals to use GCC facilities without barriers, both digitally and physically.

    Additional Information:

    RELATIONSHIPS:

    This position reports to the Assistant Director of Tutoring and Academic Support. Incumbent is expected to work cooperatively with faculty, staff, and students of the college.

    SALARY AND CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT:

    This is a part-time, SUNY RECONNECT grant-funded position that may be renewable for additional terms. Evening and weekend hours may be required. This position is compensated at a rate of $21.29 per hour.
