The Smart Scholars Program (SSP) at Farmingdale State College supports high school students from two Long Island school districts (Wyandanch and Brentwood) and is designed to provide underrepresented students with the unique opportunity to take credit bearing college courses from Farmingdale State College at no cost. In addition, special programs are offered to expose students to a variety of college campuses and local industries, businesses, and/or labs to further pique their interest and motivation for higher education.
The Smart Scholars Student Support Specialist will report to the Director of the Smart Scholars Program, who manages two grant-funded programs designed to support the College's mission to promote access and support academic excellence. Collectively, these programs serve over 250 students from local partner school districts. Farmingdale State College (FSC) has a long-standing history of dedicated service toward the mission of providing at-risk students with the opportunity for access to college through comprehensive transition and support program services. In addition to taking credit bearing college courses at FSC or satellite locations, our students have the opportunity to receive academic support for high school coursework and testing, participate in a myriad of activities intended to strengthen their interest in and pursuit of higher education, and explore career options. Such activities include college tours, site visits to various businesses and educational facilities and special events/workshops.
Primary responsibilities include:
+ Assist with visits to partner schools, and supervise and track student participation, including weekends (Saturday classes and workshops; promotional events) and after school.
+ Conduct workshops, meetings, and support sessions to facilitate student college and career readiness and student success.
+ Evaluate student outcomes and assist with identifying students' needs and interventions, and facilitate workshops, counseling meetings, and events focused on student achievement and college and career readiness.
+ Assist with the coordination and chaperoning of student field trips, workshops, enrichment activities, events etc.
+ Communicate with students, parents, and other stakeholders regularly regarding program information, activities, and events, and update student contact information as needed.
+ Participate in program promotional events and work to recruit and retain students.
This position is part-time, hourly. The selected candidate may work up to 25 hours per week, including Saturdays.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
+ Bachelor's degree in social services, education, or related field
+ Ability to travel to partner school districts

This is a part-time Research Foundation position.
