    Assistant Professor - Black and Latino Studies

    FACULTY VACANCY ANNOUNCEMENT

    The Black and Latino Studies Department at Baruch College, CUNY, invites applications for a tenure-track Assistant Professor, beginning Fall 2026. We seek a scholar whose research and teaching examines the impact of technology on African diasporic communities through critical frameworks, algorithmic bias, artificial intelligence, and/or digital humanities in relation to African diasporic communities, histories, and cultural expressions.

     

    We welcome candidates whose work demonstrates how emerging technologies intersect with structures of power, race, and gender. Areas of specialization may include (but are not limited to): digital archives and preservation, data justice, surveillance studies, critical AI studies, computational humanities, games, or the cultural politics of platforms and algorithms.

     

    We seek an interdisciplinary scholar and teacher committed to advancing critical scholarship that interrogates the relationship between technology, power, and African diasporic experiences across historical and contemporary periods. The successful candidate will contribute to our department's mission of fostering rigorous, accessible scholarship while serving CUNY's diverse student body and commitment to public education.

    Research and Scholarship:

    • Conduct innovative interdisciplinary research examining technology's impact on African diasporic communities

    • Employ digital humanities methodologies including data visualization, digital archives, sound studies, and/or community-based digital projects

    • Engage with critical approaches to technology, artificial intelligence, and data sovereignty

    • Maintain an active publishing agenda and pursue external funding opportunities

    • Present work at professional conferences and engage in public-facing scholarship

    Teaching:

    • Teach undergraduate courses in the Black and Latino Studies curriculum

    • Opportunities to teach graduate students at the CUNY Graduate Center

    • Develop new courses that advance the field and respond to student and community needs

    • Demonstrate excellence in teaching diverse populations, including first-generation college students and multilingual learners

    Service:

    • Contribute meaningfully to departmental, college, and university service

    • Participate in academic community building and mentorship

    • Engage with CUNY's mission of accessible, transformative public education

    QUALIFICATIONS

    Required:

    + Ph.D. in Black Studies, African Studies, African Diaspora Studies, Media Studies, Digital Humanities, Science and Technology Studies, or any related field by time of appointment

    + Research focus on Africa and diaspora with demonstrated expertise in digital humanities, AI, ethics, and technology studies

    + Experience with digital humanities methodologies (data visualization, digital archives, sound studies, community-based digital projects, etc.)

    + Evidence of excellent teaching, including experience working with first gen and low income student populations

    + Demonstrated research productivity and potential for continued scholarly excellence

    + Commitment to critical approaches to technology

    Preferred:

    + Experience with community-based digital projects or participatory research methods

    + Familiarity with data sovereignty frameworks and ethical AI approaches

    + Background in media studies, philosophy, social sciences, or emerging areas in technology and Black studies

    + Multilingual capabilities, particularly African languages

    + Experience developing digital humanities curriculum or leading workshops

    COMPENSATION

    $82,663- $98,995; commensurate with qualifications and experience
