    The University of Southern Maine’s Environmental Science & Policy Department is seeking part-time faculty to teach in our Wetlands Ecology Laboratory (ESP 304) for our Spring 2026 semester, beginning January 20, 2026.

     

    This course is currently listed to run on Wednesdays on the Gorham Campus from 2:00PM – 4:50PM through May 1, 2026.

     

    Wetlands Ecology Laboratory (ESP 304) – An introduction to wetlands types and field methods, with an emphasis on field visits, wetlands species identification, and projects.

     

    We are seeking a student-focused instructor who will be responsible for the full delivery and grading of the course. Responsibilities include developing the course, teaching, assessing student performance, and meeting with students as needed. The instructor will be provided with the course learning objectives, program competencies, and suggested topical outline and will be given a previous course syllabus for reference. ESP 304 occurs during the same semester as ESP 303 Wetlands Ecology Lecture (required for students in ESP 304). The Faculty member teaching ESP 303 will work closely with the ESP 304 instructor.

     

    The Department of Environmental Science and Policy (ESP) (https://usm.maine.edu/department-environmental-science-policy/) is a friendly and interdisciplinary department that welcomes instructors from different backgrounds and experiences and encourages collaborations between faculty and students. We take an interdisciplinary and applied approach to understanding and solving problems arising from human/environment interactions. Our curriculum prepares students for a variety of professional roles in the environmental field as well as for graduate school.

     

    Part-time faculty members are paid on a credit hour basis based on prior teaching experience. In addition, The Center for Academic Innovation (https://usmdl.org/) provides learning design consulting and faculty development opportunities to help faculty to create engaging programs, courses and lesson plans grounded in evidence-based best practices for every modality.

    Required Qualifications:

    + Graduate degree in a natural science field, with at least one degree related to environmental policy, environmental science, biology, ecology, or a related field.

    Preferred qualifications:

    + Professional experience with wetland delineation and environmental regulations related to wetlands preferred.

    + Local knowledge of wetlands, wetland plants, and wetland soils preferred.

    + Familiarity with general ecological field methods preferred.

    + Teaching experience preferred.
