    Job Summary

    The School of Music at The University of Southern Mississippi seeks an accomplished conductor to serve as Artist in Residence. This position is designed to enhance the artistic, educational, and community profile of the School through guest conducting, student recruitment, and fundraising support. The Artist in Residence will bring artistic leadership and professional experience to the School’s already renowned ensembles and serve as a vital ambassador for the institution.

     

    This is a 12-month, non-tenure track appointment. Rank and salary will be commensurate with qualifications and experience. The Artist in Residence reports directly to the Director of the School of Music.

     

    Primary Duties and Responsibilities

     

    + Guest Conducting:

     

    Lead rehearsals and performances with a variety of ensembles within the School of Music.

     

    Collaborate with faculty conductors/ensemble directors to support artistic excellence and broaden performance opportunities for students.

     

    + Recruitment:

     

    Actively participate in student recruitment efforts at the local, regional, and national levels.

     

    Represent the School of Music at festivals, honor bands, conferences, and other recruitment events.

     

    Engage prospective students through on- and off- campus events, masterclasses, and workshops.

     

    + Fundraising and Advancement:

     

    Assist the Director of the School of Music and the College of Arts and Sciences Major Gifts Officer in donor cultivation and stewardship activities.

     

    Participate in development initiatives.

     

    Advocate for the importance of philanthropic support to sustain scholarships, guest artist projects, and ensemble tours.

     

    + Military and Veteran Outreach:

     

    Serve as a bridge between the School of Music and military musicians, veterans, and active-duty service members interested in pursuing study at the University.

     

    Provide mentorship and support to military-affiliated students, helping them navigate academic and artistic pathways within the School.

     

    + Other Duties As Assigned

    Minimum Qualifications

    Master’s degree

     

    Significant demonstrated experience as a conductor.

     

    Evidence of strong communication, leadership, and collaborative skills.

     

    Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

     

    + The successful candidate will demonstrate professional experience as a conductor and educator, with the ability to inspire artistic excellence across diverse ensembles.

    + Strong communication and interpersonal skills are essential for engaging students, collaborating with faculty, and cultivating community and donor relationships.

    + The position requires organizational skill, adaptability, and the capacity to serve as an effective ambassador for the School of Music.

    Preferred Qualifications

    Master’s Degree with emphasis in Conducting and/or equivalent professional experience.

     

    Established record of successful conducting at the professional level.
