Organization and Position Overview
Lilly recently announced a $4.5 billion investment to create the Lilly Medicine Foundry (LMF), a new center for advanced manufacturing and drug development. The first-ever facility of its kind, combining research and manufacturing in a single location, the Medicine Foundry will allow Lilly to further develop innovative solutions to optimize manufacturing processes and increase capacity for clinical trial medicines, while also reducing costs and environmental impact.
The Sr. Manager, Utilities Engineering provides oversight and leadership to multiple utilities related engineering personnel in regard to all engineering related aspects of the complex network of centrally and locally managed utilities on the LMF campus.
During the project phase, the Sr. Manager, Utilities Engineering will directly align with the Global Facilities Delivery (GFD) group in a cross-functional project team in charge of the construction, commissioning, qualification, start-up and operational readiness of all utility-related systems.
During the day-to-day operation the Manager, Utilities Engineering will be responsible for driving operational efficiency, reliability and overall lifecycle management of all critical Bulk/Site Utilities associated with the LMF. The Sr. Manager, Utilities Engineering will also be responsible for driving continuous improvement initiatives and local capital investment for all critical utilities on the LMF campus.
Key Responsibilities:
+ Lead the Utilities Engineering group within the Facilities, Utilities, Maintenance and Engineering (FUME) organization by building a deep technical engineering expertise and capability in the following core areas:
+ HVAC
+ Gray Utilities
+ Clean Utilities
+ Electrical Distribution
+ Utilities and Environmental Controls (Tank Farm / Bulk Waste)
+ Responsible for all systems under their responsibility (GMP and non-GMP utilities and ancillary systems associated with the LMF and understanding their applications in pharmaceutical manufacturing, trending critical process parameters and awareness of industry standards and trends.
+ Ensure compliance related activities such as deviations, change controls and CAPA’s are resolved and implemented in conjunction with Operations, Process Engineering, Supply Chain EHS, and Quality Assurance.
+ Ensure the assigned systems and processes are aligned with external regulations and Industry / Lilly Standards and Best Practices.
+ Lead and participate as required in teams, committees, or other groups and/or individually to achieve the departmental, site and/or company goals.
Specifically, during the startup phase of the Lilly Medicine Foundry site (2025 to 2027) leadership will be expected to be collaborative, inclusive, and support the broader team to:
+ Build the organization with the necessary capability, capacity and culture to support all critical and non-critical utilities at the LMF to the highest standards of operational excellence.
+ Develop and implement the systems and processes needed to operate and maintain the critical infrastructure by leveraging existing Lilly knowledge and practices where necessary but also incorporating external experiences and learning.
+ Ensure regulatory compliance and operational excellence by supporting lean principles.
+ Support the project team as they deliver the facility to the site team, by providing feedback and hands on support.
Daily Support:
+ Be a passionate role model for team members in terms of performance and behaviors. Help people improve their performance and close performance gaps with appropriate training, professional development and coaching interventions.
+ Provide oversight of utility systems and trend KPI’s to ensure critical systems are operating efficiently, effectively and in compliance with internal and external requirements.
+ Oversee the applicable processes in order to operate and maintain the systems and equipment within controlled parameters.
+ Apply technical problem solving knowledge in regards to equipment failure and troubleshooting by demonstrating Root Cause Analysis (RCA) principles and provide guidance to personnel in the resolution of system / process issues.
+ Collaborate and provide clear communication with internal customers on issues that involve critical usage of utilities.
+ Provide technical assistance as necessary to internal FUME departmental staff and cross functional partners such as Operations, QA and Process Engineering.
+ Support and prepare the department to be internal and external inspection ready and drive any corrective action items with applicable partners such as Quality and HSE.
+ Provide oversight for QMS (Quality Management Systems) such as Trackwise and ensure CAPA’s are implemented on time.
Basic Requirements:
+ Bachelor’s degree in engineering or related technical field
+ Minimum of 5 – 7 years of work experience in manufacturing / operations and/or engineering, preferably in a GMP environment.
+ Previous supervisory experience of engineering personnel
+ Ability to lead a technical team, make independent decisions, and influence diverse and cross-functional groups.
+ Ability to operate within a regulated industry and make risk-based compliance-related decisions.
+ Ability to instill teamwork within the department and demonstrate key interpersonal skills.
Additional Preferences:
+ Previous system start-up, equipment/process Commissioning & Qualification (C&Q) experience.
+ Experience with Building Management Systems (BMS)
+ Understanding of Facilities/Utilities Systems energy reduction techniques
+ Engineering experience with manufacturing plant utilities
+ Project management experience
+ Experience with maintenance and computerized maintenance management systems (CMMS)
+ Previous experience with deviation and change management systems including Trackwise.
+ Demonstrated office software skills (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, UMS, data historian) and collaboration sites
+ Excellent interpersonal, written and verbal communication skills
+ Knowledge of cGMP
+ Demonstrated high level of understanding of engineering concepts, 1st principles, and engineering functional standards
+ Strong technical aptitude and ability to train and mentor others

Actual compensation will depend on a candidate’s education, experience, skills, and geographic location. The anticipated wage for this position is
$99,000 - $145,200
Full-time equivalent employees also will be eligible for a company bonus (depending, in part, on company and individual performance).
