    Assistant Attorney General- Education and Government Services

     

    The Georgia Department of Law serves the citizens of the State of Georgia by providing legal representation of the highest quality to the agencies, officers and employees of state government and by honorably and vigorously carrying out the constitutional and statutory responsibilities of the Attorney General. The Department of Law is organized into the Executive Office, five legal divisions, four specialty units, and an operations division. The position filled through this announcement will serve in the Education & Government Services section of our Government Services & Employment Division.

    Job Summary

    Attorneys in this section provide advice and representation to the University System of Georgia, the Technical College System of Georgia, the Department of Education, the Professional Standards Commission, the Public Defenders Council, the Nonpublic Postsecondary Education Commission, the Office of Bar Admissions, and the State Charter Schools Commission. The section also houses the Attorney General’s Open Government Mediation program. Attorneys in the section also provide representation to the state’s judicial branch in non-monetary actions brought against appellate or superior court judges. Travel is occasionally required for this position. Teleworking is available.

     

    Primary Duties & Responsibilities

     

    + Litigates cases:

    + Participates in hearings and appears in state and federal courts to try cases and argue motions and appeals;

    + Researches and prepares pleadings, motions, and briefs;

    + Attends depositions; interviews witnesses and retains expert witnesses;

    + Participates in settlement negotiations;

    + Prepares pleadings and discovery responses;

    + Provides legal advice and/or representation to clients/agencies; drafts memoranda of advice;

    + Conducts research on pertinent legal issues; keeps abreast of recent legal developments;

    + Drafts formal opinions in response to legal questions;

    + Attends client, board, departmental, and division meetings, as required;

    + Provides training as needed to clients, the bar, and the public on matters falling within the section’s area of practice

    + Travel as required by the position (travel is typically limited);

    + Performs other related duties as assigned.

    Minimum Qualifications:

    • · Member of the Georgia Bar and in good standing.

    Preferred Qualifications

    Preference will be given to applicants who possess general litigation experience.

    Additional Information

     

    We will consider applicants who reside outside of metro-Atlanta and want to work a hybrid schedule.

     

    Employment is contingent upon completion and satisfactory results of a criminal background check. Candidates that are being strongly considered for the position will also be required to submit a Department of Law employment application & waiver to background check, Georgia Department of Revenue Tax Clearance letter, and copies of official college transcripts
