Job Summary
The Bowdoin College Museum of Art is one of the earliest collegiate art collections in the nation. It came into being in 1811 and now includes more than 30,000 objects created over 5,000 years by artists from around the world. Always free and open to the public, the museum serves as an important cultural resource to the region and is integral to the curriculum of the Bowdoin student community.
The Assistant Registrar maintains confidential archival and permanent collections files, manages photography, and processes permanent collection image reproduction requests. This position reports to the Registrar and Collections Manager and works closely with the curatorial and art handling staff.
Education/Skills Requirements
Bachelor’s degree in a related field required. Masters degree in museum studies or art history preferred, or equivalent combination of education and experience.
+ Knowledge of current best practices in museum collections cataloguing required.
+ Knowledge of artistic rights and reproductions.
+ Excellent written and verbal communication skills are necessary for interacting with various stakeholders
+ Strong organizational, time management, and record-keeping skills are essential.
+ A high level of accuracy and attention to detail is crucial for maintaining accurate records.
Experience Requirements and/or Equivalents
1-3 years of collections management, conservation, installation and/or registration experience in a museum, gallery or fine art shipping setting required.
+ Experience with Microsoft 365, photo editing software, and collections management software required; knowledge of TMS , TMS Collections, and/or Embark systems preferred.
+ Knowledge of Crystal reports preferred.

Standard Work Days and Hours
Part time, year round, position, 24 hours per week during Museum office hours (M-F, 8:00 – 5:00) on a specific schedule to be determined. Occasional evening and/or weekend work is required.
