Job Summary
Upward Bound at Bowdoin College is funded by two grants through the US Dept. of Education serving 167 limited income, first-generation college-bound high school students across 14 Maine high schools, including schools in six schools in Mid Maine and eight in Washington County.
Bowdoin College is seeking two High School Tutors for the 2025–2026 academic year. Tutors will support designated Upward Bound students in both group and one-on-one settings, providing assistance with homework, organizational strategies, task prioritization, and supplemental instruction in specific subject areas. One tutor will serve students at Woodland Junior-Senior High School and Calais High School, and the other will support students at Machias Memorial High School and Washington Academy.
The hourly rate for this position is expected to be between $15 and $20, based on skills and experience.
Education/Skills Requirements
+ High school degree or GED equivalent required; Some college coursework highly preferred
+ A valid Driver’s license and the ability to meet the requirements of the College’s current Motor Vehicle Use Policy required
+ Strong verbal and written communication skills, with the ability to explain challenging concepts, provide clear instructions, and deliver constructive feedback
+ Creativity and flexibility to adapt to each student’s individual learning style
+ Patience and compassion to support students as they build skills and improve their performance
+ Demonstrated academic excellence and subject matter proficiency
Experience Requirements and/or Equivalents
+ Entry level position, no prior work experience required
+ At least six months of tutoring high school students highly preferred
Applicants must meet the minimum qualifications in this posting to be considered for hire.
Standard Work Days and Hours
+ This is an onsite, part-time, non-benefits eligible position working approximately 4 hours per week, based on high school schedules and calendars
