Sterling Industrial, headquartered in Evansville, Indiana was founded and incorporated in 1982. Our company began and grew from a need for swift, reliable service for utilities in southern Indiana. Meeting the needs of utilities through small emergencies, we found an increasing need to add pipefitters and millwrights to our operation, and from there our company continued to grow.
As a multi-craft union contractor, we provide civil, structural, mechanical, and electrical services for new construction and maintenance/retrofit projects. Our core markets include power generation, metals, pulp/paper, plastics, and chemical markets. Position Summary:
The Equipment Manager is responsible for the leadership, planning, and oversight of the company’s equipment group, ensuring that all construction equipment is maintained, deployed, and managed to maximize safety, efficiency, and value. This role will lead the equipment staff, manage vendor relationships, oversee equipment financial performance, and provide strategic planning around capital investments, maintenance, and equipment life cycle management.
Key Tasks and Responsibilities
• Oversee day-to-day operations of the equipment group, ensuring availability, readiness, and reliability of equipment fleet to meet project demands.
• Establish, implement, and monitor standardized processes and procedures that ensure consistent quality, safety, and efficiency.
• Conduct site visits and audits to verify equipment condition, utilization, and compliance with company standards.
• Manage and enforce preventive maintenance (PM) programs to extend equipment life, reduce downtime, and ensure compliance with manufacturer and regulatory standards.
• Develop and maintain systems for tracking equipment condition, repair history, and service schedules.
• Manage relationships with third-party rental companies, ensuring competitive pricing, high-quality service, and reliable equipment.
• Negotiate rental contracts, monitor vendor performance, and drive cost savings through strategic vendor management.
• Own and manage the full Profit & Loss (P&L) for the equipment group, including income, labor costs, maintenance expenses, and capital investments.
• Track, report, and forecast equipment-related costs to ensure budget compliance and identify opportunities for cost optimization.
• Implement a robust maintenance and replacement program to maximize fleet efficiency and return on investment.
• Lead multi-year capital expenditure (CapEx) planning, aligning equipment strategy with projected company workload and growth.
• Identify new equipment needs based on market demand, company capabilities, and project forecasts.
• Ensure equipment provided to the field meets company quality and performance standards.
• Drive a strong safety culture, ensuring equipment staff follow safe work practices and all equipment delivered to the field is in safe operating condition.
• Partner closely with the Construction Services Manager and other operational leaders to align equipment management strategies with overall company goals.
• Serve as a subject matter expert on equipment-related issues, providing input into project planning, scheduling, and risk management.
• Communicate proactively with project teams to anticipate equipment needs and resolve issues before they impact operations.
Education/Experience
• Bachelor’s degree in Construction Management, Engineering, Business, or related field preferred; equivalent experience considered.
• Minimum 4-7 years of progressive equipment management experience in the construction or industrial sector.
• Proven leadership experience managing teams in a fast-paced, operational environment.
• Strong knowledge of construction equipment, life cycle management, and maintenance programs.
• Experience with vendor negotiations, rental agreements, and financial management.
• Strong analytical and budgeting skills with demonstrated P&L responsibility.
• Excellent organizational, communication, and interpersonal skills.
