    Responsibilities

    The Hyperbaric Chamber Technician performs job functions under the direct supervision of the Ambulatory Nurse Manager and is responsive to the direction of the Hyperbaric Technical & Safety Director and Hyperbaric Provider (MD/APP), as appropriate.

    Job-Specific Competencies:

    + Operates and maintains monoplace and multiplace chamber environments, as well as associated systems and equipment required for clinical and research applications of hyperbaric and hypobaric medicine

    + Daily operational safety oversight

    + Assists hyperbaric nursing staff in the delivery of patient care appropriate to the level of medical training

    + Facilitates safe patient handling and movement with cart and chair transfers

    + Assists with activities required of the preparation of patients for lock entry, treatment initiation, and egress

    + Facilitates the hyperbaric pre-treatment safety briefing

    + Demonstrates an ability to equalize middle ear and tolerate the hyperbaric environment to perform ancillary duties in the multiplace hyperbaric chamber

    + Observes an on-call schedule responsive to the urgent and emergent need of patients requiring hyperbaric oxygen therapy

    + Working knowledge and ability to operate the control systems of the chamber within 90 days of hire

    + Achieves certification as a certified hyperbaric technologist (CHT®) within one year of employment and maintains this certification for the duration of employment

    + Maintains certification or licensure in CHT®-qualifying profession

    + Maintains current Basic Life Support for (BLS) Health Care Providers

    Qualifications

    High school diploma or GED. Within the past five years, two or more years of patient care experience. At the time of employment, satisfies the qualifying vocational pathway requirement, as defined by the National Board of Diving and Hyperbaric Medical Technology (NBDHMT), to become certified as a hyperbaric technologist (CHT®). Patient care experience and/or operations performance in a clinical monoplace or multiplace hyperbaric chamber facility. Knowledge of the standards and codes related to hyperbaric facilities set forth by the Undersea and Hyperbaric Medical Society (UHMS); National Fire Protection Association (NFPA); American Society of Mechanical Engineers, Division of Pressure Vessels for Human Occupancy (ASME/PVHO); and applicable standards from the U.S. Navy Diving Manual. Maintenance of a hyperbaric chamber and all associated equipment (i.e., compressors, air dryers, fire suppression systems, gas and vacuum systems). Completion of a 40-credit hour, Undersea and Hyperbaric Medical Society (UHMS) or National Board of Diving and Hyperbaric Medical Technology (NBDHMT) approved, Hyperbaric Medicine Introductory Course. Experience with medical ancillary equipment to include: IV pumps, mechanical ventilators, and cardiac monitors. Mechanical aptitude. Ability to carry out instructions independently. Demonstration of well-developed verbal and written communication. Working knowledge and ability to operate the control systems of the chamber within 90 days of hire.

     

    Maintain current Basic Life Support for Health Care Providers. Achieve certification as a hyperbaric technologist (CHT®) within one year of employment and maintain certification for the duration of employment. Maintain licensure in CHT®-qualifying profession.
