The Wall Street Journal is seeking an experienced and highly creative Supervising Video Editor to join its video team in New York.
WSJ Video blends deep reporting with an array of formats: investigations, short and longform field pieces, fast-paced quick turn news content, video podcasts, social content, and series. And we are constantly innovating how we tell stories.
The ideal candidate has an extensive background editing across these varied formats. You bring solid news judgment and a passion for news and doc to the table. You are comfortable fully owning edits - working with raw material from the field and from studio shoots, building compelling stories and narratives. You’ll build stories with broll, verite, dialogue and interviews and shape the pacing and feel of each piece. You know how to expertly weave in music when needed. Expert experience with Adobe Premiere is required.
To apply, please submit your resume, a short cover letter, and a link to your portfolio or three pieces you fully edited yourself.
You Will
+ Manage multiple edits and timelines simultaneously, ensuring deadlines are met
+ Collaborate with producers, reporters, EP’s and the graphics team to produce videos
+ Provide technical and creative guidance to editors and producer/editors, ensuring projects align with WSJ Video best practices
+ Design, implement and maintain optimized and streamlined post-production workflows
+ Mentor and manage at least one full time video editor and freelance editors and other post-production roles as required
+ Mentor and train producer/editors as needed, for consistency across editing
+ Maintain in-depth knowledge of evolving editing software, file formats and archival practices
+ Manage and review all final deliverables, making sure they meet creative and technical standards for all platforms
+ Be proactive and solution-oriented to deal with challenges and setbacks that pop up, maintaining active lines of communication for each project
+ Be up to speed on the latest media techniques, technologies and software
You Have
+ At least 8 years of experience editing videos of all lengths and structures
+ Extensive professional experience in post-production, preferably with some experience in a supervisory role
+ Prior experience with every aspect of video production from start to finish, under tight deadlines, working with teams across news, series, and graphics and design.
+ Technical strength in color-grading and audio mix; strong finishing skills incorporating motion graphics and on-line mastering of deliverables
+ Excellent taste in choosing music to score pieces where required
+ Strong mentorship and leadership skills to guide creative team
+ The ability to manage complex workflows and a large amounts of assets
+ An impeccable eye for detail and cinematic storytelling and a true understanding of creating pace in an edit
+ A deep understanding and interest in The Journal’s core coverage areas.
+ Some prior documentary and series experience.
+ Clear communication skills with exceptional written and collaboration skills.
+ Exceptional organizational and time-management skills.
The Journal’s reporters, editors, developers, and audio and visual journalists create important and impactful stories, firmly rooted in fact and adhering to the highest ethical standards.
