Job Summary
Under general supervision of the Medical Director or designee, assists in gross dissection and description of surgical specimens and provides other support duties related to Anatomic Pathology.
Essential Functions
+ Assists in the preparation and performance of human surgical tissue examinations. Completes dissection and gross description of selected surgical cases daily, including inking and tumor staging. Selects and submits appropriate sections for routine microscopic examination. Selects and submits appropriate sections for frozen section, routine or special fixatives including imprints for light, electron or fluorescence microscopy.
+ Prepares photographic record of lesions or specimens for documentation, conferences and/or publications as directed by the pathologist.
+ Establishes and updates surgical pathology grossing manual as required by CAP and other regulatory agencies.
+ Depending on campus location may: Assist in the preparation and performance of human post-mortem examinations. Initiates and verifies that appropriate authorization is obtained for post-mortem examinations. Collects the following specimens 100% of the time: Routine sections of major organs and tissues for retention Appropriate tissue sampling for microscopic evaluation Appropriate samples for toxicology, microbiology and/or cytogenetic studies as needed. Performs autopsy including external exam, in-situ organ inspection, evisceration and dissection. Dictates records and discusses cases with assigned pathologist. Assures patient is properly prepared for release to funeral director including appropriate documents and notices. Assists pathologist in performing frozen section examinations. Successfully operates Voice Recognition System used for dictation of gross description surgical specimens.
+ Participates in the following: Participates in Q.I./process improvements, data collection, QC documentation, and/or CAP surveys as applicable to the assigned department. Planning and organization by working as a team, working efficiently to complete the workload, prioritizes, and is capable of task switching when necessary. Meets the requirements of performing successfully new procedures, operating new equipment. Complies with criteria for training and competency. Completes mandatory online education, including department-specific modules as assigned. Attends department meetings, continuing education in-services, seminars, teleconferences and/or other required meetings to maintain, update or broaden knowledge on current practices or healthcare related topics. Cost effectiveness: Efficient use of time in completing tasks accurately and timely. Adheres to hospital policy on punctuality and attendance, and observes lunch and break times set for the shift/department. Mindful of appropriate use of laboratory funds through purchase requests and the observance of wasteful use of supplies. Teach and assist lab assistants, fellows, residents, and other personnel as assigned.
+ Participates in: Patient and Family-Centered Care culture Q.I./process improvements, data collection, QC documentation, and/or CAP surveys as applicable to the assigned department. Staff activities of a High Reliability Organization (HRO) Assists in training new hires as applicable/assigned Staff meetings and committee meetings as assigned.
+ Cost effectiveness: Efficient use of time in completing tasks accurately and timely. Mindful of appropriate use of laboratory funds through purchase requests and the observance of wasteful use of supplies.
Qualifications
+ Required Bachelor's Degree or equivalent of Clinical Laboratory Science, Biology, or related science discipline.
+ Required a level of knowledge acquired through completion of a NAACLS accredited program.
+ CRT-Pathologist Assistant - ASCP American Society for Clinical Pathology Upon Hire required Or
+ CRT-Pathologist Assistant - ASCP American Society for Clinical Pathology 1 Year
