HOW YOU WILL IMPACT OUR MISSION
The Clinical Veterinarian provides routine and urgent medical and surgical care and supports institutional and regional collection plans by ensuring wildlife are healthy for shipment. The Clinical Veterinarian also has responsibilities in the development and oversight of preventive medicine and husbandry programs. This position reports to the Director of Veterinary Services or other designated staff.
WHAT YOU WILL DO
+ Conduct veterinary clinical management focusing on routine clinical procedures, medical case management, critical care case management, and regulatory functions in a variety of non-domestic and domestic species. Includes use of diagnostic imaging, including radiographs, ultrasound and computed tomography.
+ Write complete and concise medical records.
+ Formulate and execute diagnostic plan and develops a tier of therapeutic options.
+ Perform basic endoscopic and surgical procedures.
+ Mentor wildlife care, residents, students, and visiting veterinarians.
+ Participate in the development and revision of policies, procedures, and standards, including preventive medicine and husbandry programs.
+ Collaborate to identify and address disease trends and emergent health and welfare concerns.
+ Provide medical care for organizations conservation species.
WHAT WE ARE LOOKING FOR
A motivated veterinarian that will thrive working with a large team of dedicated professionals in a zoological medicine environment serving a large and varied animal collection. Strong communication, organizational skills, and commitment to learning are essential for success in our practice.
JOB EXPERIENCE
+ Three years of zoological medicine training or equivalent experience required.
EDUCATION AND CERTIFICATIONS
+ A DVM or equivalent degree from an AVMA accredited institution or ECFVG certification required.
+ California Veterinary License within 60 Days required
+ USDA category II Accreditation or become USDA Category II Accredited within 60 Days required
+ Current valid California Driver’s License required
+ Certification or Eligibility for Certification in the American College of Zoological Medicine Upon Hire preferred
SKILLS AND KNOWLEDGE
+ Proficiency in diagnostic imaging, basic surgery, and basic endoscopic procedures required
+ Ability to work effectively with Microsoft Office software, electronic medical record keeping systems (ZIMS), imaging systems, and cloud-based sharing required.
+ Strong working knowledge of current standards of veterinary care required.
+ Familiarity with general husbandry and veterinary management of common zoological species required.
+ Strong working knowledge of resources pertaining to zoological species required.
+ Strong working knowledge of regulations pertaining to veterinary medicine and zoological institutions required.
+ Ability to work a very flexible schedule, including weekends, nights and holidays including extended hours required.
+ Ability to work as part of a team as well as independently in a diverse environment required.
+ Ability to work in a multi-faceted fast paced environment required.
+ Strong time management skills to prioritize resources effectively required.
+ Ability to apply critical thinking in problem solving required.
+ Ability to effectively and respectfully communicate both verbally and in writing at multiple levels within the organization required.
+ Ability to work at either the San Diego Zoo or San Diego Zoo Safari Park campus required.

+ Position Type: Salaried Full-Time Exempt Seasonal Position from October 27 through April 26.
+ Salary Range: $128,098.15
