FACULTY VACANCY ANNOUNCEMENT
The Department of Romance Languages at Hunter College of the City University of New York invites applications for a full-time, tenure-track position at the rank of Assistant Professor of Spanish, to begin in August 2026. We seek a generalist in Early Modern and/or Golden Age Spanish studies, with a strong interdisciplinary research agenda. A secondary area of expertise is highly desirable and may include Early Modern transatlantic studies, colonial studies, women’s and/or gender studies.
The successful candidate will be expected to teach three courses per semester, including undergraduate and graduate offerings, and to contribute meaningfully to the Department’s curricular development. In addition to maintaining an active program of original scholarly research leading to publication, the candidate will be engaged in the administrative and intellectual life of the Department and the College. They will advise and mentor undergraduate majors, minors, and language students, as well as MA students in Spanish. The position also offers opportunities for interdisciplinary collaboration with Hunter’s Honors programs, its Public Humanities initiative, and the CUNY Graduate Center.

QUALIFICATIONS
Applicants must hold a PhD in Spanish or a closely related field by the time of appointment. They should demonstrate native or near-native fluency in Spanish and professional proficiency in English. The successful candidate will show evidence of scholarly excellence and a clear potential to sustain a productive research agenda.
We are seeking candidates with demonstrated experience teaching across all levels of the undergraduate and graduate Spanish curriculum. A commitment to inclusive teaching practices and working effectively with students from diverse cultural and socio-economic backgrounds is essential. The ideal candidate will also have experience and interest in language pedagogy, and the ability to design and offer innovative courses aligned with their areas of expertise.
COMPENSATION
Compensation is commensurate with experience within the range of $90,838-$109,025.

CUNY is in the process of implementing salary schedule increases. Once implemented, salaries of eligible employees will increase by approximately 3.5% effective 9/1/26, in accordance with the terms of the PSC-CUNY collective bargaining agreement.
