JOB SUMMARY
UConn’s Research Integrity and Compliance Services within the Office of the Vice President for Research, is seeking an experienced Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee (IACUC) professional to join our team. Reporting to the Director of Research Compliance, the IACUC Program Specialist (Administrative Program Support 4) will work closely with researchers, IACUC program staff, Animal Care Services, and other University offices to ensure the University’s animal care and use program maintains compliance with federal, state, and local regulations and policies governing the use of vertebrate animals in research and teaching. This position does not involve the provision of direct care to animals but is a research compliance oversight position.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
+ Performs administrative pre-review of protocol applications, facilitates veterinary and ancillary review processes, and provides review process oversight to ensure protocols are approved in a timely manner. Maintains internal database of animal protocols.
+ Advises researchers on protocol submission development and matters related to regulations regarding the care and use of vertebrate animals in research and teaching.
+ Assists with programmatic functions including protocol-grant congruency reviews, annual reporting (USDA, AAALAC, OLAW), memorandums of understanding with collaborating institutions, and other internal and external communications and reports.
+ Coordinates and participates in semi-annual animal housing and use facility inspections. Compiles reports and performs follow-up processes as required.
+ Promotes the University as a key player in the IACUC compliance areas by maintaining professional relationships with peers and regulatory representatives and participating in professional development activities to maintain current knowledge of regulations and national accreditation standards.
+ Assists with the development and implementation of policies and guidelines, educational materials, presentations, and post-approval monitoring activities. Contributes to the writing of IACUC Office Standard Operating Procedures. Revises IACUC protocol forms and checklists as needed.
+ Facilitates IACUC or other research compliance stakeholder meetings as needed, including logistical arrangements and preparation and distribution of decisions, agendas, minutes, etc.
+ Participates in the planning and preparation for and execution of regulatory and accreditation visits and other IACUC related activities.
+ Performs other related duties as assigned.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
+ Bachelor’s degree in biological sciences or related field and four to five (4 -5) years of related research administrative experience, or equivalent combination of education and experience.
+ At least two of those years of administrative experience must be in an academic research compliance setting requiring knowledge and understanding of applicable regulations.
+ Demonstrated experience with federal, state, and local regulations and policies pertaining to the care and use of animals used for research and teaching.
+ Experience utilizing organizational skills to effectively multi-task to meet deadlines and troubleshoot problems.
+ Experience exercising a wide range of independent judgement and discretion and maintaining confidentiality. Demonstrated interpersonal and communication skills (written and oral) and experience working with a highly diverse group of people, both independently and as part of a team.
+ Demonstrated experience using Microsoft Office 365 suite.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
+ Experience involving the use of animals in a research, medical, or similar institutional settings and a demonstrated understanding of scientific methodology.
+ Certified Professional IACUC Administrator (CPIA) or eligible within one year of hire.
+ Experience with electronic protocol management systems, including direct experience with implementation of an electronic system.
