    Herkimer College is seeking qualified applicants for a full-time Executive Director of Workforce and Economic Development.

     

    The Executive Director of Workforce and Economic Development provides visionary, college-wide leadership to strengthen the connection between education, work, and regional prosperity. Serving as a bridge between Herkimer County Community College and the Mohawk Valley's employers and industries, this position drives the creation, delivery, and growth of innovative workforce programs, credit and non-credit courses, microcredentials, apprenticeships, internships, workshops, and short-term training opportunities, which meet the region's evolving needs. The Executive Director fosters dynamic partnerships, secures resources, and positions the college as a trusted partner in advancing the Mohawk Valley's economic vitality.

    Major responsibilities:

    A. Provide vision, leadership, and entrepreneurial direction in developing workforce training programs that expand opportunity, strengthen regional industries, and contribute to long-term economic resilience.

    B. Analyze labor market and regional data, including the needs of manufacturing, healthcare, agriculture, small business, and technology sectors, to design customized training solutions that deliver measurable results and position the Mohawk Valley for growth.

    C. Build and sustain innovative partnerships with public and private sector organizations, K-12 schools, community-based organizations, workforce boards, and economic development agencies to align workforce education with regional priorities.

    D. Establish and implement evaluation systems to measure program effectiveness, outcomes, and return on investment for the college, students, and employers.

    E. Advise on state and federal workforce legislation and policy, represent the college in discussions and advocacy efforts that shape workforce development priorities.

    F. Collaborate with Academic Affairs to ensure alignment and integration between credit and non-credit workforce education offerings creating seamless pathways for students into careers and further education.

    G. Ensure compliance of workforce programs with institutional, state, federal, and accrediting regulations.

    H. Represent the college locally, statewide, and nationally, elevating Herkimer College's visibility and influence in the workforce and economic development space.

    I. Engage directly with employers and industry leaders through convenings, advisory councils, and needs assessments to ensure responsiveness to workforce demands.

    J. Partner with Marketing and Communications to design and execute outreach strategies that highlight the college's workforce programs and regional impact.

    K. Serve as a visible ambassador for the college at business, industry, and community events across the Mohawk Valley.

    L. Identify, pursue, and manage grant and external funding opportunities that expand, diversify, and sustain workforce initiatives.

    M. Performs other duties as assigned.

    Job Requirements:

    Minimum Experience and Educational Background:

    + Master's degree from a regionally accredited institution with at least five years of progressive experience in workforce development, economic development, or a related field; OR

    + Bachelor's degree from a regionally accredited institution with at least eight years of progressive experience in workforce development, economic development, or a related field.

    + Proven ability to plan, implement, and evaluate comprehensive workforce strategies.

    + Demonstrated success in long-range planning and program development alignment with labor market needs.

    + Experience in curriculum development, instructional design, and innovative workforce training models.

    + Strong oral and written communication skills, with the ability to influence, persuade, and build consensus across diverse stakeholders.

    + Demonstrated entrepreneurial mindset with experience building and sustaining partnerships.

    + Skilled in resource development, including grant writing/management and fund raising.

    + Understanding of adult learning methodologies and best practices in workforce education.

    + Experience managing staff in a collaborative, performance-driven environment.

    + Commitment to customer service, continuous improvement, and measurable outcomes.

    + Strong organizational, project management, and facilitation skills.

    + Proficiency in data analysis and technology tools related to workforce development.

    + A deep appreciation for the mission of community colleges as drivers of access, opportunity, and regional vitality.

    Preferred Experience:

    + Experience in a community college environment.

    + Experience driving results in a unionized environment.

    + Established relationships with Mohawk Valley industry, workforce boards, and economic development partners.

    + Teaching experience at the postsecondary or corporate training level.

    + Familiarity with high-demand sectors in the Mohawk Valley, including advanced manufacturing, healthcare, logistics, agriculture, technology, small business, and OSHA/regulatory compliance.

    + Demonstrated success in marketing workforce programs and increasing market share.

    + Ability to work evenings and weekends, as required, to meet employer and community needs.

    + Sensitivity to and understanding of diverse populations and cultures.

    Additional Information:

    The salary range for this position is $79,581 - $132,635, commensurate with qualifications and experience.
