    The Idaho State Historical Society is a trusted guide through the state’s history and how it has shaped every aspect of our lives, our land, our communities, our government and our people. Created in 1881 and established as a state agency in 1907, the Idaho State Historical Society (ISHS) is an extraordinary system of cultural and historic resources comprised of the Idaho State Museum, Idaho State Archives, Idaho State Historic Preservation Office, Old Idaho Penitentiary and Historic Sites Program.

    Summary

    The Maintenance Craftsman Senior at the Idaho State Historical Society (ISHS) will perform maintenance and repair work at the ISHS agency’s properties and sites located in Boise, Franklin, Hansen and Pierce primarily in the areas of plumbing; masonry; carpentry; and landscaping.

    Responsibilities

    Facility Maintenance

     

    + Electrical. Maintains and repairs panels, circuits, wiring, and related systems; replaces switches, receptacles, ballast’s, fuse boxes, heat systems, motors, fans and lights; repairs electric motors and extension cords; installs communication cable and telephone lines; assists journeyman electricians in new installations.

    + Plumbing. Maintains and repairs plumbing fixtures, lavatories, faucets, sinks, tubs, water heaters and water service and drain lines; installs domestic, irrigation, and sprinkler systems; cleans/unclogs pipes, tanks, floor drains and sewers; cuts and threads or sweats pipe; repairs steam traps and pipes on heat systems; conducts preventive maintenance of plumbing and steam systems; assists journeyman plumbers in the installation and remodeling of plumbing systems.

    + Carpentry. Installs ceramic floor and wall tile, linoleum, plastic laminate and similar products; repairs built-up, shake, shingle, and other roofs; patches holes in walls using sheetrock, plywood, tile, and plaster; glazes windows; builds walls, partitions, benches, decks, and tables; sketches from oral instructions and works from drawings to design and build specialty items; builds and sets forms and pours and finishes concrete; builds fences and gates.

    + HVAC. maintains and repairs heating, ventilating, and air conditioning equipment such as air compressors, dryers, strainers, pneumatic and electronic controls and piping systems; ensures water and steam coils, motors, belts, pulleys, condenser pans, duct work, dampers, and related systems are working properly; repairs fire alarm and pumping systems.

     

    Miscellaneous

     

    + Conducts preventive maintenance on building devices and systems

    + Operate equipment used in building maintenance and repair

    + Performs machinist work involving design and fabrication of specialized parts and equipment

    + Welds and repairs and fabricate brackets, fixtures, and similar items

    + Rebuilds motors and performs mechanical and preventive maintenance work on equipment

    + Lays brick, stone, and block

    + Removes debris from area

    + Repairs appliances

    + Responds to emergency call-backs

    + Assists with general related trade duties

    + Monitors and hauls (if necessary) trash at Table Rock Site.

    + Monitors building, landscaping, and seasonal issues (such as snow & ice removal) and determines proper course of action.

    + Some amount of weekend and evening time spent at ISHS programming events and workshops

    + Performs additional duties as required.

    Minimum Qualifications

    Good Knowledge of:

    + Carpentry, plumbing, electrical and general building-Typically, this is gained through completion of formal training (such as in a vocational technical school) including practical training and experience covering all the following skills: OR at least two years of professional work experience performing all the following: skilled carpentry, plumbing, electrical, and building maintenance repair or using and maintaining tools and equipment normally associated with carpentry, mechanics, plumbing, and electrical work.

    Some knowledge of:

    + HVAC and mechanical systems maintenance-Typically gained by formal training/education specific to HVAC systems OR approximately six months of (supervised) professional work experience performing routine HVAC maintenance. Performing limited HVAC maintenance on an occasional basis or home maintenance is not qualifying.)

    + Building Codes-Typically gained by completion of formal training, such as in a vocational technical school OR two years’ experience.

    Experience:

    + Reading blueprints and schematics-Typically gained by completion of formal training, such as in a vocational technical school OR at least two years' experience.

     

    Supplemental Information

     

    + Currently have, or have the ability to obtain, a valid Idaho driver's license

    + Ability to work in all weather conditions and move in and around confined spaces, elevators, lift and carry items weighing approximately 90 pounds, bending, stooping, shoveling, and climbing ladders, with or without reasonable accommodations.

    + Ability to estimate time and materials needed for projects

    + Ability to travel throughout the state (less than 10%)
