    Position Summary

    Munson Health Care is seeking an experienced Radiation Safety Officer (RSO) to lead and oversee our comprehensive radiation safety program. The RSO will ensure the safe and compliant use of ionizing and non-ionizing radiation across clinical, research, and administrative settings. Acting as the primary liaison with regulatory agencies, this role is critical to advancing a culture of safety through policy development, training, audits, and continuous improvement.

    Qualifications

    Required:

    + Bachelor’s degree in Health Physics, Radiological Sciences, Medical Physics, or related field.

    + Minimum of 4 years of experience in a medical or research radiation safety program.

    + In-depth knowledge of federal and state radiation safety regulations and license management.

    + Strong analytical, organizational, and communication skills.

    + Proficiency with radiation monitoring software and dosimetry systems.

    Preferred:

    + Master’s degree in a related field.

    + Certification by the American Board of Health Physics (ABHP) or American Board of Radiology (ABR).

    + Experience with radioactive materials licensing and regulatory submissions.

    + Meets NRC requirements to be RSO on an NRC license for 10 CFR 35.100, 35.200, 35.300, 35.400, 35.600, and 35.1000 uses.

    + Listed as RSO within the past 7 years on an NRC License, NRC Master Materials License, or Agreement State License for the above NRC medical uses.

    + Familiarity with imaging modalities (CT, fluoroscopy, nuclear medicine) and therapeutic equipment (cyclotrons, linear accelerators).

    + Experience in emergency response planning for radiological incidents.

    Key Responsibilities

    + Develop, implement, and maintain radiation safety policies and procedures in compliance with NRC, FDA, OSHA, EPA, and state regulations.

    + Maintain and enforce the ALARA (As Low As Reasonably Achievable) program; monitor occupational exposure and investigate incidents.

    + Conduct audits, inspections, and risk assessments for radiation-producing equipment and radioactive materials.

    + Oversee the receipt, storage, use, and disposal of radioactive materials; maintain inventory and ensure proper labeling and security.

    + Ensure calibration, maintenance, and effective use of radiation detection and monitoring equipment.

    + Provide onboarding and annual radiation safety training for clinical, research, and support staff.

    + Evaluate research protocols and clinical procedures involving radiation for safety and regulatory compliance.

    + Advise on shielding design, facility layout, and equipment acquisition; contribute to construction and renovation planning.

    + Prepare and submit regulatory reports; maintain licenses and documentation; lead responses to inspections and audits.

    + Serve on the Radiation Safety Committee and provide leadership in policy and practice.

    + Supervise, mentor, and support professional development of radiation safety staff.

    + Ensure compliance with NRC security requirements for use and transport of radioactive materials.

    + Stay current with regulatory changes, technologies, and best practices.

    + Delegate responsibilities to Associate Radiation Safety Officer and other staff as appropriate.
