About this Job
The LSU Shreveport Student Success Center seeks an experienced and student-centered academic advisor to serve as Assistant Director of Academic Advising and College Advising Coordinator. This new position will play a key role in enhancing advising practices at LSUS, supporting the centralization and holistic delivery of academic advising to undergraduate students.
The Assistant Director will serve as a generalist advisor and supervisor, providing proactive, student-centered guidance to undergraduate students, while playing a key role on the Academic Advising leadership team and providing supervision and guidance to academic advisors. This position will also serve as the College Advising Coordinator, collaborating with administrators in each college to ensure program alignment of advising practices.
The successful candidate will contribute to ongoing transformation efforts, developing support structures that increase student retention, success, and career readiness. This position reports to the Director of Academic Advising.
Minimum Qualifications
Required Qualifications, Skills, and Characteristics
+ Bachelor’s degree from an accredited institution (or four years of related experience, plus three years of responsible managerial experience).
+ Minimum of three years’ experience in academic advising in higher education.
+ Strong understanding of holistic, proactive advising models.
+ In-depth knowledge of academic curricula, university policies, and general education requirements at LSUS.
+ Familiarity with admissions practices, financial aid policies, and student success strategies.
+ Working knowledge of Louisiana Board of Regents recommendations, requirements, and strategic goals.
+ Demonstrated leadership and supervisory skills.
+ Familiarity with student success initiatives, retention strategies, and academic planning tools.
+ Experience with student information systems and academic advising software.
+ Strong communication and collaboration abilities, exhibiting respect and collegiality aligned with a team-centered environment.
+ Proven customer service orientation combined with professionalism when managing multiple stakeholder demands.
+ Dedication to providing a welcoming and supportive environment that benefits all students, regardless of background or circumstance.
Preferred Qualifications, Skills, and Characteristics
+ Advanced degree in student personnel services, higher education administration, or a related field.
+ Eligibility to teach at the college level in accordance with SACSCOC accreditation standards (Master’s degree or higher).
+ Experience teaching college-level courses, particularly to first-year students.
+ Experience supervising and training student employees or professional staff.
Job Duties and Other Information
Key Responsibilities:
Supervision & Leadership:
+ Supervise, mentor, and evaluate academic advisors assigned as lead advisors for each college, fostering a collaborative, supportive team environment aligned with a holistic advising model.
+ Collaborate closely with the Director of Academic Advising to coordinate services, conduct regular assessments, address challenges, and develop standardized processes to ensure consistent, high-quality advising and timely student support.
+ Partner with college deans and department chairs to design and implement college-specific advising strategies, develop targeted resources, and craft outreach materials, ensuring seamless integration within the centralized advising model.
+ Oversee the coordination of experiential learning initiatives by working with advisors, academic departments, and Career Services to connect students with internships and other relevant experiential opportunities.
+ Support the development and coordination of a faculty mentor program, aligned with the centralized advising structure to enhance student-mentor connections.
+ Collaborate with college administrators to support dual enrollment programs.
Student Advising & Support:
+ Serve as a generalist advisor as needed, guiding students through academic planning, course selection, and understanding degree requirements.
+ Assist students in navigating the college environment and processes, helping them utilize available support resources effectively.
+ Conduct timely interventions to address academic or personal challenges, ensuring students receive appropriate guidance and support.
+ Engage students in proactive, appreciative advising conversations to understand their goals, challenges, and aspirations.
+ Teach at least one (1) first-year seminar course annually.
Program Coordination & Collaboration:
+ Coordinate group advising and other advising outreach activities, including collaborating with Enrollment Management on orientation sessions and onboarding events.
+ Facilitate ongoing communication across colleges to share best practices, address concerns, and resolve advising issues.
+ Collaborate with Academic Success to develop proactive academic intervention strategies designed to prevent probation and improve retention.
+ Partner with Career Services to ensure advisors are trained in career exploration, major selection, and linking academic pathways with future career goals.
Data & Assessment:
+ Regularly audit student course schedules to ensure accurate course placement aligned with goals for academic progress and student success.
+ Utilize data to monitor student progress, identify at-risk students, and develop targeted intervention strategies.
+ Help establish and track academic and career milestones, ensuring timely support.
+ Support the ongoing assessment and improvement of advising practices and programs.
Additional Duties:
+ Assist with outreach materials, online resources, and training modules for advisors and students.
+ Maintain current knowledge of best practices in academic advising, student success, career development, and higher education trends.
+ Serve on various committees and working groups to support transformation efforts.
